Band/artist history
DaShawn Brown also known as Judah Priest was born August, 24th 1978 in Philadelphia, PA. His interest in music began in the late 80’s when Hip-Hop really began to take off in the music industry. It was then in 1988 when his cousin Mike moved in with him and his father. Mike was always rapping. This intrigued DaShawn. He liked what he had heard and began to listen closely and study his cousin's methods and style of rapping. When he finally understood the format of rhyming he wrote his first two bar rhyme called Life & Beyond. He named himself MC Major and became a partner in a group named 3rd Degree. After a while the group became the top Hip-Hop group in his high school. Unfortunately some of the members were incarcerated and the group had to disband. DaShawn was one of those members. After being arrested at the age of 14 for theft, DaShawn began to realize that God had another purpose for his life. His mother had always taught him about God, but this was a point in his life when he needed to find out who God was for himself. He experimented with different religions, but his place was with Christ.
In 1982 he joined Freedom Christian Bible Church in Philadelphia, PA. One day his god sister, Brooke Bolton, performed a rap at church and of course this brought back fond memories of when he was with 3rd Degree. He talked with his mother about performing in church, but she insisted that he get his spiritual life in order. At first this was difficult for him and old habits were hard to break but he began to listen to God and to study the bible. He realized that, unlike man, God's promises were never in vein. As DaShawn studied he became closer to God. During one of his study sessions between him and God, it was revealed to him in revelations the pseudonym he was to use when performing for the Lord. DaShawn was reading about the 12 Tribes of Judah. Immediately he wanted to know the meaning of Judah so he looked it up. It means joy. He added that to priest, which means teacher and Judah Priest, one having the joy of teaching, was born.
Judah Priest, with his god sister Brooke, started a new Christian rap group called the Righteous Leaderz. Later they joined another group called the Royal Nation. With the Royal Nation, he released an EP in 1994. The group soon broke up after that and Judah stopped rapping for three years. In 1997 he started his solo career and put together another group the 39 Lashes. Following the scheduled release of his album this December, Judah plans to release a compilation album with 39 Lashes, who are also featured on various selections from his Debut Album.
Judah Priest's ministry is really straight up and to the point. His mission is to tell all about God's glory and mercy through his own life experiences. As a young man he has experienced many things in life. He has been involved with sex, drugs, false religions, etc. In his music he sets out to give an understanding to those who do not know Christ and about the difference He makes in one life. He speaks bluntly about the lusts of the flesh and how they can affect an individual who doesn't know Christ as their personal savior. His style could very much be labeled hardcore, but it is definitely not preachy or judgmental. One quote from Judah Priest sums up the purpose of his ministry"But even through these rough times God forgave me and now allows me to tell others about His word and how He delivered me from a world of destruction."
Through his ministry Judah Priest strives to be, at the least, the best Christian man and father to his daughter Dashana.Have you performed in front of an audience?I do alot of different events, I love being on stage, I love the spotlight I guess. My Special moment came in 2000 at Rapfest when the whole crowd got hype and started screaming a chorus from one of my songs "Empire Strikes" The Chorus Goes "Praise God Most High All devils Must Die." Seeing that made me feel real special. It was like I put a stamp on Christian Hip Hop in the one moment. I thank God for that experience.
