The Next Generation
Soulful, silky smooth, uniquely eloquent, are to name a few of the words one could use to describe a singing group made up of four handsome young men with the style of The Temptations and dance moves of Usher. These four balladeers grew up in the same house, each one with his own personal style and charisma. To see the females swoon over them in a packed room working themselves into frenzy, you begin to see the full vision of things to come. A group made up of brothers like the Jackson (5) of yester year following similarly a familiar course. Bringing newness to the game, with a twist of old school soul, are the two ingredients they have incorporated in their style. These four young men represent the next generation of R&B. We bring to you, Jon’ Ra, ‘The Next Generation’.
Jon’ Ra’s name represents the French word genre, which means distinct, artistic style or form. That definition absolutely describes these guys. Their style is symbolic of a collaboration of many musical art forms; however, it’s a style all their own. Jon ‘Ra is the R&B version of the southern, loosely used buzzword, ‘Dirty south’. With their fused version of hip-hop and R&B and a hint of old school, these guys are making a name for themselves.
Growing up in a military household with minimal resources, these young men learned early the value of the dollar and the need for family. Money was tight and very little was spent on frivolous indulgences. Music became the affordable hobby and a way for the brothers to spend time together and to escape the reality of their struggles. This past time became the brother’s full time passion. Like so many young aspiring artists before them, the old school R&B groups influenced them the most. From this exposure they began to create their own personal style. In 2002 they wrote and recorded their first song.
Getting their music heard like so many turned out to be a challenge. Being white and sounding soulful allowed for many critics. This obstacle inspired them to work harder and not allow the stereotypes of the industry to discourage them. Two years and many slammed doors later, their demo found its way into a prominent music producer based out of Orlando Florida. Joe Magic, one of Florida’s top music producers saw the raw potential. The rest as they say is ‘history’.
This past summer marked the release of Jon ‘Ra’s debut, self titled CD. It’s a modest but contagious collection of R&B tracks that will have you hitting the replay button over and over again. The pulse pounding singles, ‘Move’, ‘One Night Stand’, ‘Can U Feel Me’, and ‘Appreciate’ proves this group has the soul and lyrics that reach out to a fan based desperately seeking a more romantic based, mature approach to R&B.
With an intense schedule of promotional appearances, concerts, and studio work Jon ‘Ra hasn’t forgotten the importance of given back to the community. Their entire concept is based around charity and youth. They have made themselves available to work with local charitable organizations and truly believe giving is better than taking. “We’ll never forget where we come from,” says Jared, the youngest of the brothers. “We love what we do and feel blessed to just have the opportunity to give back.”
Currently, the group is back on home turf, back in the studio, and writing songs for the second full length CD, which is due to be released in December 2005. “Our first CD was just a taste of things to come as well as to introduce ourselves to an audience we feel are ready for what we have in store”, adds Robert the eldest of the siblings. “You gotta work your butt off, keep it real, and earn your respect in the street. We are on a mission and are willing to do whatever it takes because our goal is to be the one of the best.” The buzz on Jon ‘Ra is spreading fast. Deservingly so, in a day where mediocrity is the norm and sameness the standard. A real life band of brothers on a mission, marching to their own beat, and whose greatest strength are each other.
The next generation has arrivedBand/artist history
We were born in the woods, in a one room log cabin....nahh, just messing with ya. We're from New England originally (Go Patriot's!), but ended up in Orange Park,Florida because our Pop retired from the Navy in Jacksonville. We were raised us up on Motown and Old School R&B. We grew up jammin to the Temptations, Earth,Wind & Fire, Prince and artists like that, so music was always a part of our lives. We started jammin together in our garage about six years ago and our Parents really encouraged us and helped pave the way. The rest, as they say, is history. We love the fact that we're brothers because we're all on the same page, reaching for the same dream. We're gonna work our butt's off, keep it real and earn our respect on the street. We're on a mission man, cause we want to be the best. Believe that!Have you performed in front of an audience?Oh yea! We just came off a 6 week promotional tour this past summer. We have a full plate going into fall and the holidays, so we're pretty excited. We're currently back home in Florida, writing and recording our new CD, due for release in December 2005. We've been busy but we're having a blast!
