Jim Barnes: Lead/ Rhythm Guitarist, instructor Contact Information: Email: jmbarnes2@comcast.net Musical styles and background: Jim uses the techniques and experience of his classical and jazz training to improvise within the realms of big band, country, bluegrass, rockabilly and acoustic finger-picking. He was attracted to guitar after listening to several of the Chet Atkins albums his parents played throughout his early childhood. Jim studied with a private instructor classical guitar music and technique from the ages of five to 13. After hearing a formidable jazz guitarist at the age of 13, he studied jazz into his late teens and while at college. Throughout his schooling, Jim performed with school wind ensembles and jazz programs, receiving the best musician award from Vacaville High School. During his early career, he received numerous superior and encore performance awards for ensemble and duet performances within the California Music Education Association competitions. He also performed with the Solano Community College wind ensemble as a freshman and sophomore in high school. He continued to perform with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints’ Oakland Temple Hill orchestra for two years. While obtaining his college degree, he performed with numerous musical ensembles, indie lablel recording artists and the California State Hayward Jazz band. Jim has nearly 20 years experience of performing live and studio work and has taught private lessons for nearly twenty years. Jim has also taught in elementary and junior high schools guitar students and assisted beginning band programs. He reads music notation and chord charts. Jim plays Gibson Es 333, G&L ASAT Special, Fender Telecaster 52 Hot Rod special, Martin acoustic/ electric and Ovation country artist nylon string. His present amps are a Fender Super Champ XD, a Peavey Valveking 112 tube amp.
