Band/artist history
When we are asked about guitar heroes, we often refer to American and European guitar legends who have defined guitar playing. I'm also guilty of this. My usual reply would be Paul gilbert. But it's actually more than this. Local guitar players I had the pleasure of having contact with, made a greater impact on me. So let me tell you a little story about the guitar, my local guitar heroes, and me. I was 9yrs. old, heavily into drawing, table tennis, basketball, and tennis. Suddenly, my friend, jason, started playing guitar and quickly formed a band with our neighbors. They were a Beatles cover band. Pretty soon I started to tinker with my mom's Cebu made classical guitar. With the help of a Jingle Magazine (which comes with a chord chart) I learned how to play "The Sun Always Shines On TV" by A-ha. Of course I quickly moved to learning the Beatles' songs, the ones my brother's band were playing. He had a book of all their songs with chords. A year after, they changed their music to U2 and The Smiths. As expected, I too shifted my music style and became a U2 and The Smiths fanatic. I was like my friend's shadow; whatever he was into I was too. Sometime in 1999, through my friend guitarist, I was introduced to an amazing guitar player, someone who would eventually teach me (indirectly) all the guitar techniques that I know today. His name is jezrel versoza, guitar player for 80s bands like malsteen and kotsen. He was there with one of his bands to help my friend's band. That was when I was introduced to paul gilbert. They played "liberty" in our town fiesta, and my jaw dropped. I couldn't believe what I was hearing and seeing. He went on to teach my friend guitar tricks, and I watched real close. After their session, I went home to try out everything on my 1st guitar. My dad got me a steel acoustic guitar from audiophile in Cubao for my 10th birthday. Then there was a battle of the bands on TV around 2000-2001. pepe pilar was one of the finalists (I'm not really sure, but I think bryan zulivia was their lead singer during this time). It was my 1st glimpse of Noel Mendez who was then a member of Hayp. He was playing Van Halen stuff back then. From then on I tried to keep myself updated about him, like when he was with 2nd Wind, Francis M, and other session work he did and still does. The first time I met him, I was at the backstage of Rock and Soul Revue sometime in 2002. He was warming up for his set with 2nd Wind. I approached him, introduced myself, and asked to be taught on the spot. He was very nice and showed me some licks. When I went back to my friends, they told me he had sore eyes! That was why he was wearing shades the whole time! In the summer of 1995, I studied classical guitar in the UP Music Conservatory Extension Program. I did 6 1hr. sessions and my teacher was the great Gerry Duran. Although I wasn't a good student at that time because I was really more into rock, I really learned a lot from Gerry. He was a very nice guy, who was trying so hard to teach me while I was very distracted by other music styles. To this day, I still want to continue my classical guitar studies with him. But timing is very important, and it's been hindering me to do a lot of things. In the same year, I joined my 1st band - The nabuleyd, with fellow jyel, carlito, lee, jambee , and eddie. This band eventually became evermizzed with yashier on beat box and micheal on vocals, and stayed together until present. During this time, I met a PLDT staff who would eventually become one of my best friends. His name is dennis carilo. He taught me a lot about playing the electric guitar, and more importantly spiritual growth. He introduced me to other guitar players I never knew existed. He would go with us to gigs, and pray over us before every performance. Sometime in 2003-2004 , I saw Francis Reyes of The Dawn live for the 1st time. I think it was a Concert at the Park event. I was blown away! He was fast, he was jumping and running around the stage, he had the tricks, and he was really good! I know Teddy Diaz is legendary, very talented and passionate. But my favorite The Dawn guitar player is Francis Reyes. Now he has evolved into a very intelligent and creative guitar player, always ready with fresh ideas. During the late 90s, I rediscovered Jack Rufo. I remember seeing him once with Neocolors back in the late 80s. A buzz started to spread about Jack's guitar skills, and I wanted to see it. When I finally got to watch him again in 2003, I saw what the people were talking about. I finally met him in 2005 and immediately asked for guitar lessons. He didn't want to teach me; instead he wanted us to trade ideas. Talk about humility! That day hasn't happened yet, as I said it's the timing that's hindering me. But soon†These are the guitar players that made an impact on me as a musician and as a person. I'm blessed with having most of them as friends. I decided to write this because of the feeling I had at the "Mga Gitarista" album launch (by the way, thanks to Norby David of Overtone and my bandmates for playing with me in this event). I felt like a kid again watching these greats like Jack Rufo, Francis Reyes, Noli Aurillo, and Kakoi Legaspi, my old friend Ian Umali, and the newer guitar players like Juven, Jeff, and Barbie who will help define a lot of kid's guitar playing in the future. Too bad Lean wasn't able to play; I really wanted to watch him. I hope someday you too can have your music heroes as your friends. Long live OPM!
Have you performed in front of an audience?
yes, we do play live in different circuits of the metro. To name some; 19east, Magnet, Zirkoh, and much more. We also do school gigs. Of course we do love playing live because it is a chance wherein we could state our voice and sentiments on variety of issues. Being an artist is a responsibility... not a fad. Every gig is special... every interaction within the band and the crowd is a special moment... ecstatic.
