If you think u know what the typical emcee from Cleveland sounds like,
And your pretty sure u know what the typical beats beats from Cleveland sounds like,
You might be in for a surprise.
From Clevelands west side is Jamez Del the rapper/producer with a flair for something different.
File under: underground hip-hop, alternative hip-hop.
Jamez Del (pronounced James) is the type of rapper uncommon in todays bling bling culture. His raps touch a wide variety of subject matter ranging from made up spy stories to walks thru his neighborhood. His sense of humor is ridiculus and even off beat at times. He rarely uses vulgar language, but he slips in a style of zany erotic commentary from time to time. For instance-
“now now’ you kids behave yourselves, my baby sitter considers me to be a major pill.
She thinks im fourteen im really twenty-nine, I told my case worker she can call me anytime”
He mixes first person role play with satire, comedy, and political commentary, as different elements seem to melt together in his imagination and comes out in a wide array of rhyme styles and deliveries and ranging from a phat bubbley style to something more complex and intricate while clapping the same iambics for lengths that are sometimes over eight measures.
Lyrically speaking he generally keeps the mood lite, however at times a more serious feeling can heard. On the other hand his tracks’ take on a kool, deep, sort of movie soundtrack vibe that combined with his lyrics and delivery makes for an interesting juxtaposition.
His latest project “Cold Pizza” comes across as a collage of beats and rhymes. His drum tracks feel very solid, with bass kicks dipped in reverb and skipping snares that might remind one of the sampled break beats of musical works such as the Beastie Boys- “Paul’s Boutique” except his kicks tend to be little bassier. Some of his musical influences include the “Beastie Boys” “Prince Paul” “Wyclef Jean” “OutKast” and “Company Flo”, but he is also Known to listen to a lot of Rock and Roll and Electronic Music.
A cross between garage rock and underground hip-hop, his recordings are raw, ambient and very accesible to the listener. Utilizing various and interesting textures, Jamez Del is not afraid to experiment with weird, strange and futuristic sounds in his compositions. He specializes in bass hits and punches startegically placed over the drums, or he can perform a nice bass groove when the time is right, like in the track “Jamez was here” or “guerrilas in ‘da mudd puddles”. One of his favorite jobs is layering the tracks with moody and spacey strings, synth pads, brass stacks and other atmospheric renderings.
His approach to his music simple and spontaneous, but he definitely strives to keep it phat and thought provoking.
