Leon "Whitey" Thompson - The Unfinished Tattoo - IDC Cat #0007 / A4 Records - 001
Memory filtered through soundscape. Spoken word with background music. Alcatraz Island stories from a man who was there.
Leon "Whitey" Thompson lived through a violent lonely childhood, saw battle at sea in World War II, was a career armed robber, a long-time convict and finally became a whole man. After his last release from prison he married Helen Thompson and went to ground. Leon's restlessness inspired Helen to encourage him to revisit his past and share his experience. Here is his story, in his own words. It's a rare and intimate glimpse into a celebrated but brutal world and a clear window into life at one of the most infamous prison communities in human history: Alcatraz Island, "The Rock."

Nice work Whitey. I met you years ago when I went to Alcatraz as a tourist in my teens, that was an exciting moment for me! Your book "Rock Hard" changed my life by allowing me an insight to prison life. Your life was an inspirational one and I am glad you touched my life. I will never forget you. My heart goes out to your family and friends whom you left behind when you passed, how truly blessed they were and are to have known you. I had a copy of your book "Rock Hard" sent to my fiance, whom is currently in prison and he really enjoyed it and, of course could relate quite well. He passed it on to another con in there with him when he was done. Your life was definitely NOT wasted, I am sure you touched many lives like mine that you were not aware of. R.I.P. Whitey. You may be gone, but you are not forgotten. God bless your family and friends.
Love Always,
Katie (Delta, Colorado)
