Pop Rock

Hop On Pop is Todd Leiter-Weintraub, a songwriter who is too restless to keep himself chained to a single genre.

The songs come out of Todd, as they come. And then, it's time to have fun with 'em. So, as a listener, you never really know what you're going to get. But, hopefully you'll dig it. At least some of it.

Band/artist history

In August of 2002, Todd Leiter-Weintraub sent a copy of his demo collection (Lo-Fi Is Better Than No Fi At All) to Spade Kitty Records owner Matt Walters, who was intrigued enough to offer to release a record for him, provided he re-recorded the songs in a proper studio.

Wasting no time, Todd called upon his old friends (and former bandmates in Sub Rosa) Dave Kling and Tim Ferguson to back him on this new project, which he dubbed Hop On Pop. After a little searching, Todd wound up right back at the doorstep of Spade Kitty Records, recruiting his benefactor Matt Walters to play keyboards and round out the lineup.

A year of sporadic rehearsals and gigs followed before the band entered the studio in September of 2003 to begin recording their debut record.

The band splintered in August, 2007, leaving leader/songwriter Leiter-Weintraub alone, to pursue a more fluid format for the next Hop On Pop album.

Todd convinced HoP drummer/percussionist/multi-instrumentalist David Kling to help him out in this new venture. With Kling on-board, he picked up friends, musicians and acquaintances, nerds, and various insects wherever he found them to record a new set of songs for the anxiously awaited follow-up.

Being that the lineup changed from song to song (and that Todd's listening habits range from apples to submarines) the songlist for this new venture is even more stylistically diverse than the debut. It delves more-deeply into Todd's love of traditional American music, as well as into punk, klezmer, and electronic pop.

The new album, Chicken on a Bicycle was completed in late, 2009 and was released February 16, 2010 on Spade Kitty Records.

Have you performed in front of an audience?

We rarely play live... it's too tough to get good gigs here in Chicago.

Your musical influences

The Kinks, Harry Nilsson, Gram Parsons, The Beatles, Guided By Voices, Yo La Tengo, Husker Du, The Byrds.

What equipment do you use?

For now, just an acoustic guitar and a vocal mic. At least, when playing live. In the studio, anything goes!
