"Hellbilly, more than just a band. It's a f--k'n party. DAWG, DAWG, DAWG!!!"

Band/artist history

Hellbilly made their debut performance on the first day of spring 1998 at a large popular night club called Shots in their hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. This was a much anticipated show, based purely on Hellbilly's line up. Four seasoned veterans of Tulsa's demanding night life, Hellbilly's members were no strangers to the stage.

Hellbilly was born after the breakup of Tulsa's premier band, Cooter Brown. Cooter Browns former drummer Donny Turley and guitarist Gary "PWE" Ward had no desire to stay out of the music scene for very long at all. Both had been in successful bands since the Eighties. Donny honed his drumming in the southern classic rock band Nobody's Angel. While PWE played pyrotechnical guitars for glam bands The Animal Show and Rude Jester. After Cooter Brown they both decided on a musical direction with more of an edge, more aggression, and more attitude in sound.

They found that attitude when they brought their musical vision to guitarist Andy Williams. Andy had been on the forefront of Tulsa's thrash punk aggression movement of the late Eighties, having formed the then infamous Pit Bulls on Crack. Later in the nineties Andy created a more laid back, yet still aggressive sound in the band Jaw Breaker.

With PWE on guitar and the brunt of the vocals, Andy on guitar and vocals, and Donny on drums they needed one more member, a bass player. Enter Lonnie "Lonzo" Hughes. Donny, PWE and Andy had known Lonzo during the Eighties when he played bass and sang for the leather and hair power trio Stainless Steel. After Stainless Steel broke up PWE enlisted Lonzo to play bass in the short lived Bad Karma. After Bad Karma parted ways Lonzo became a recluse, working on his solo project Mynis Wun. That is until PWE came a calling for some aggression.

So how did these four come up with the name Hellbilly? "We all grew up in the sticks in various parts of Oklahoma and Arkansas. We learned to play different instruments and musical styles from the country folk, we can relate with the backwood folks. We just like playing ass-kicking rock."

That first night of spring welcomed Hellbilly to the first of many standing room only shows. Since then Hellbilly has been packing the clubs and building a loyal fan base by playing the latest in new music, the best in classic rock, and incorporating original material. Ask Hellbilly about their favorite gig and they may tell you about the night they opened for FireHouse at Tulsa City Limits, or when they play the annual Bikers Against Child Abuse Rally, or they may just tell you about the gig they had last night.

With three part harmonies, trading off vocals, and a twin guitar attack, their sound and talents have been likened with a tight, well-oiled machine. Every night out with Hellbilly is a PARTY!!! Check out the picture page at WWW.HELLBILLY.NET.
