Have you ever wondered what would happen to you if you suddenly developed clinical depression and agoraphobia and spent a few years living in a basement consuming only coffee, beer, weed and cigarettes with only a computer, a junky 4-track recorder, a drum machine, guitars, basses, keyboards and microphones to keep you company?
The answer is: You would become Nathaniel Incorporated. You would release music under the name Grumblebunny. You would become beloved by millions of Grumblebunny cultists around the world.
Band/artist history
Nathaniel Incorporated, member of rock legends Jupiter's Thigh, has been recording and releasing homemade tapes under the Grumblebunny moniker since 1992. Grumblebunny combines the lo-fi, DIY ethic with ambitious songwriting and smart lyrics to create a unique sound that has been described variously as "classic," "subversive" and "freaked out."
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I play live with my band Jupiter's Thigh (www.jupitersthigh.com) and occasionally we throw in a Grumblebunny tune, but other than that, I don't play live right now. I may be putting together some solo acoustic gigs after the next CD is released, though.
Your musical influences
Pixies, Sonic Youth, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, John Prine, Lyle Lovett, Big Star, 80s New Wave, Dostoevsky, Richard Brautigan, Jerzy Kosinksi, Denis Johnson, Stanley Kubrick, junk technology, lo-fi recording techniques along the lines of Ween and Guided By Voices, the internet, drugs, clinical depression and girls who have hurt my feelings.
What equipment do you use?
Almost all Grumblebunny stuff is recorded on 4-track, usually according to MusicDogma 2000 rules (what's that? You can find out at www.amp3.net/md2000).
