In a world full of superficial superstars, rappers often deliver too much hype and too little substance. It takes a rare emcee to rise above the rabble and deliver some righteous flow. Enter the MC named Golden. Somewhere between old school hip-hop legends, new school emcees and coffee shop slam poets, lies the imagination of this 26 year old emcee that hails from Minneapolis. Golden is not just a name, but a definition of the artist who has begun to stake his claim in the hip-hop world.
Golden, born Stuart “Casey” Golden, breaks out from the “bling-bling” of today’s rap and hip-hop into a more meaningful direction. As a graduate of Macalester College with a degree in Communications, he injects intelligence and wit into his well-crafted lyrics. Whether it be the party track “Elevator Music” where he breaks necks with: “I'm that smooth, lewd dude/ Still in the groove/ Willin’ to move many people like a minister do/ Administer truth.” Or the more introspective, emotionally driven flow on “Falling”, “I wish I could crack myself open like the ocean/ So you could see in past my skin/ Like a jellyfish in/ It’s more than words/ I focus on more than earth/ So I push my pen to paint portraits of texture.” Golden has mastered the art of rhyming his thoughtful lyrics with the style of a seasoned veteran.
As a founding member of the group S.U.S.P.E.C.T.S., Golden and crew sold more than 3,000 records in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metropolitan area. The success of the critically acclaimed S.U.S.P.E.C.T.S. CD, “Delusions of Grandeur,” helped reinvent the sound of their local hip-hop scene while also bringing attention to the many talented rappers and groups around them. No stranger to the stage, Golden has performed at hundreds of shows across the country, taking hip-hop to the next level live, and commanding the mic as a lyrical visionary. Although Golden has been writing and performing for over a decade, it is only recently that he has ventured out as a solo artist.
In his short time solo, Golden has already been signed to a production deal with Beets and Produce Inc., a Los Angeles based company headed by renowned producer and music director for the Black Eyed Peas, Printz Board. “When I saw Golden perform I immediately saw natural star quality paired with raw talent,” says Board. “He has passion. He’s dope.” Board has worked with the best in the business, including Dr. Dre, Mariah Carey, Nikka Costa, Macy Grey, Smashmouth, Warren G, and Xzibit.
Golden prides himself on his ability to entertain and connect with audiences. With an energetic hip hop spirit; the blue eyed Jewish born emcee often stepped onstage to hostile audiences, only to win them over with his striking flow. Never at a loss for words, he has the ability to keep it fresh by freestyling and blows away fans with his improvisational capabilities. Go to show and you will see for yourself how Golden commands the stageshe may even break into Marvin Gaye in the middle of a song. However, it is Golden’s songwriting abilities that further set him apart from many of today’s so-called Emcees, and his lyrics and flow are as golden as his name.
Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, Golden blends the best of East Coast storytelling with the style and finesse of the Midwest, using his fluid vocal talents to lace hooks with captivating harmonies and choruses. According to Board, “Casey has Quincy Jones type melodies in his head.” It is this versatility and depth that brings Golden to the forefront of his genre as a true contender to the hip-hop throne, while maintaining a commercially viable sound.
Even in the midst of industry buzz and growing acclaim, Golden remains humble and true to his music and lyrical vision. Golden began rhyming to give voice to many issues that he saw as unjust. In seeing the inequity in how he and his friends were treated, he often wondered why no one ever did anything. Golden says, “I started rhyming to wrestle with inconsistencies I saw in societyand life. Like, why bad shit happens to good people and why people are treated differently based on appearance? While most emcees find the hardest way to say the simplest things, I try to find the easiest way to express the hardest things.” His songs like, “If 6 were 9” and “Hollywood and Hocus Pocus” illustrate his ability to be real with listeners. This concern for understanding is the driving force behind Golden’s lyrics and quest to be heard.
Golden is not afraid to uncover the faults in himself, society, prejudice, and faith. His penchant for memorable hooks ensures his words will be heard. Hip-hop and rap radio has been oversaturated with mindless records, leaving a void for deeply poignant songs and clever lyrics. Golden achieves this balancing act with a style and wisdom seldom possessed by a man of his age.
