Fluent was raised in Maryland by two hard-working parents. At age three he wrote his first song and put it to music on a small electric piano given to him by his grandmother. From an early age Fluent was exposed to folk music and classic rock, but eventually began to aggrandize his musical interests by scanning the radios and walking daily to a local CD store.
While attending elementary school he decided to peruse percussion (xylophone, timpani, drum kit etc.) and over the next five years he would compose two pieces that were performed with an ensemble. Though mostly interested in hard rock, 1994 brought about a change. "I listened to any and all genres of music, despite where my primary listening was focused. I listened to the major D.C. Rap Station (93.9 Kiss FM) every morning practically, but I was writing more rant-type songs, and playing my drum set loud and fast." He purchased his first rap CD, Coolio's and began to expand his CD collection in a different direction.
After being asked to leave the private school he was attending, Fluent began high school in the public school system. A different world...slightly. But a different mindset...completely. In the halls of this new realm Fluent was pulled into freestyling battles. By utilizing his quick mind and already honed semantic lexicon, intact with etymological enlightenment and educated jargon, he was able to split-secondly craft rhymes that were both profoundly metaphorical and relevant. That, combined with a love for teasing motherfuckers just for the Hell of it, led to a new passion - showing that you are wack. "I am Fluent, and you are not." he would say while taunting his supposed competition. It was all in good fun, but he knew that he to take it further. "Honestly, these kids, and myself included, did not know where it was coming from, but it worked. No bullshit, kids were asking me if they could copy my rhymes to take home and show off with, and I humbly obliged. But the whole thing was just like this consistently maniacal happenstance of random battle sessions, encircled by people who didn't even necessarily like each other, that eventually inspired a serious drive for using my skill to not only entertain, but create change and instill hope to others that were going through hardships." Then, in 11th grade, he met Thirty3 and the flowing started getting more vicious and inspired. In his room, with a pair of shitty computer speakers and a tape recorder they began to record their freestyles over any beat they could get their hands on. From that point on, Fluent began intensely writing rhymes with both wit and substance.
Fluent graduated with a poor GPA, but learned the auto body vocation and began working in various shops over the next years. Eventually, his parents moved to New Jersey and he moved to Worchester, Massachusetts. He attended a work program that provided a roof, heat, running water, and eighty dollars a week. There, he continued to work in the auto body trade, but managed to make money on the side by working extra hours. "That year was the best of my life, even if the administrators that ran the program were a bunch of sandbagging Hapsburgs. I learned a lot about myself, and wrote approximately 250 rhymes." Alas, he was eventually forced to leave the program early for various violations, and moved back to New Jersey.
While in New Jersey he grew restless of working 8-6 everyday on cars. Though he enjoyed the physical labor, it was unfulfilling. So, he searched on the Internet for "New Jersey Hip Hop Labels," and a link for Vigilant Productions appeared. He emailed and waited. Blesst responded to his outcry by inviting him to come spit a little bit at Clearcut Recordings in Garfield, New Jersey. Though painfully nervous, when it was Fluent's turn to spit, he laid down some of his hardest verses, and that was that. Fluent signed with Vigilant Productions in 2004 and they have been making hits ever since.
Fluent and Vigilant Productions have released one LP thus far entitled , and his second masterpiece, an EP entitled will be released shortly.
Fluent currently lives in Connecticut where he studies history. He is, obviously and forever, still doing the goddamn thing.
