Experimental Sounds

The creator of Exis is Joe Williams, a composer and producer working from his home studio in Leeds, UK. Joe began writing music under the name Exis in the summer of 2000, as a pet project to run alongside his work as a media composer. The plan was simple to make instrumental electronic music as an outlet for the creativity that was all too often restricted by the client-based nature of Joe’s other work. After beginning with a rough sketch for 'Take Me Back Down', Joe continued to work on new Exis tracks whenever time allowed, gradually developing a distinctive sound and building a body of work until he felt the time was right to present Exis to the world in February 2002. The first step was to launch the Exis website www.exismusic.com, which swiftly received many positive comments from the Internet community following promotion in music newsgroups and forums. According to one visitor, Joe became "the first person in history to spam a.m.aphex and still get the two thumbs up” while another reacted rather more bluntly with “your beats are ****ing great!” Joe is currently seeking an established record label to work with on future Exis releases, and other people or organisations looking to develop mutual opportunities. Interested parties should contact Joe by email at joe@exismusic.com
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Joe hasn't managed to come up with a way to present the Exis experience live yet, but hopes to do so in the future.
Your musical influences
Warp Records artists, 19th century Russian composers (especially Tchaikovsky) and 'noiseniks' like Sonic Youth, Alec Empire, Ministry.
What equipment do you use?
Fairly limited set-up, its more important to make the most of what you have than to get the latest expensive gear. Yamaha DX-7 is a personal favourite though.
