DIGITAL ACTIVITY and the birth of ROCK AMBIENT
The digital activists who work on projects under the label, DISTURBING MUSIC, have come together and moved apart like a double helix over the years, and have worked in concert with ringleader Geoff Westen, creating eclectic musical projects such as The Balls, The Pigs, and Vidiots.
Most recently, Westen conceived the DIGITAL ACTIVITY workshop where he and his digitists fell into a groove that didnt seem to fit any existing genre theyve since dubbed it Rock Ambient. RA is everything ambient IS and plenty more of what ambient ISNT.
Rock Ambient is music freed from the strict confines of pop song structure. These are musical journeys or soundscapes that have texture and concept. They ebb and flow, twist and turnloud to quiet, frantic to soothingall in one piece of music. It has allowed DA the freedom of sonic and structural exploration with no boundaries.
Traditionally, ambient music is a non-intrusive audio background played at low volume. Its supposed to calm your senses. It used to be the sound of waves on the shore, wind in the trees and Music for Airports. Nowadays it might be electronic beeps and buzzes with sweeping filters against a lifeless beatbox (zzzzzz).
Rock Ambient is all of that, PLUS! By all means listen to Rock Ambient as a low volume background; but instead of calming, it will energize your environment and arouse your subconscious. On the other hand, because RA has more edge, more punch and more guitarswith extreme dynamics and complex orchestrationour hardcore fans insist that RA can also be cranked up for an aural assault. Either way you go, it will stick in your head because there is always a melody entwined within the layers.
Geoff Westens DIGITAL ACTIVITY workshop is the latest chapter in his on again, off again love affair with a professional music career. A rock musician, band member, songwriter and road player, in his latest incarnation he has merged his pop sensibility of the 90s into the freeform Rock Ambient music created and performed by DIGITAL ACTIVITY. His long-time friends and contributors in DIGITAL ACTIVITY, encompass the breadth of the countless musical genres of rock and roll. You may not know them individually, but you have certainly heard their musicianship and listened to their songs over the years.
DIGITAL ACTIVITYS first CD, BIRTH, unleashes Rock Ambient on the world. Westen sums up their mission this way, We want to create a new experience for ourselves and a new experience for our listener on every one of our CDs.
