Little girl. Big voice. These are the things that pop into people's heads when they see Devon perform for the first time. But after the initial shock of hearing such a huge voice coming from such a tiny frame wears off, the thing that people are most impressed with is not just Devon's voice, but her Voice.
Although her vocals are powerful, it is Devon's honest, insightful lyrics and unique musical style that leaves people buzzing. Her music combines the anger and intensity of Alanis Morissette with the eclectic instrumentation and passionate vocal style of Paula Cole to form a new genre of music all its own. Middle Eastern-influenced melodies, tribal percussion, and soul-baring lyrics intertwine to create a textured sound that is unique to the world of alternative music.
With the release of her new EP, caged bird, Devon brings to her fans a cross-section of her diverse musical style. From the gut-wrenching angst of "Daddy Dearest" to the painful self-reflection of "Perfect", Devon's songwriting is refreshingly honest and true. It is this openness that connects with her listeners, drawing them into the worlds that she paints with
her songs, and allowing them to see a bit of themselves in her.
In an industry full of carbon-copies and cliches, it is rare to find an artist who is capable of reinventing a genre. But somehow, impossibly, Devon has done just that. She has taken a stale alternative music genre and made it her own, and, in the process, has defined a new musical style for the next generation.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I love playing live. There's an energy and a presence in a live performance that just isn't there when you're recording in a studio. You sing harder and louder than you ever thought you could. Something just takes you over and possesses you.
