Band/artist history
Derrick Smith better known as “D Smith”, is far from just another aspiring hip hop artist. He was born and raised in the chaotic streets of South Central, Los Angeles. Growing up D. Smith saw a lot of his friends get caught up in gangs, drug dealing, and many other traps street life brings. Music was the only thing that kept D. Smith from going down that same road. “A lot of kids end on the wrong track because they don’t have anything better to do. While other kids was out there getting into trouble I was usually listening to some music and writing some rhymes.” D. Smith first began writing rhymes at the age of 11. “I wasn’t even serious at first. I couldn’t even count bars. Honestly I never really planned on making a career out of this, I just did it because it was something I liked to do.” It wasn’t until he was 15 that D. Smith pastime turned into his dream. In the summer of 2000 D. Smith began recording music for the first time on a karaoke machine in his mom’s garage. “Man I didn’t even have any beats. My boy use to just bang on the table and I would rap over that. In 2002 D. Smith and a few friends started the group hoodlife. The group created quite a local buzz and released one mixtape before going their separate ways. After things didn’t work out with hoodlife, D. Smith decided to take break from music for a little while. After about a 1 years, D. Smith returned to the music scene and began pursuing his solo career. This time around D. Smith was a lot more focused and determined. In 2005 he released his debut solo mixtape “Let’s Talk”. The mixtape displayed a lot more growth and maturity than his previous works. A lot of people began to notice him on a whole different level. “A lot of people use to overlook me before I dropped “Let’s Talk”, I don’t know I guess they thought I was just like all these other up and coming artist who have nothing to talk about. When I went to record this album I was like okay I have to get more personal and let people know I not average, I can get deep, I can make the street anthems, I could do the chick songs, I can do it all.” It’s that perfect combination of originality, versatility, and realness that sets D. Smith apart from the competition. D. Smith is currently working on completing his debut solo album which has yet to be titled. He is also work on signing a major record deal and getting is his own independent label, Get A Grip Entertainment, off the ground. He is definitely, someone to look out for in the near future.
