After several years of performing in studios, cafes, solo and in groups, it was time for a change, time to dig deep. Deep down across the abyss between mind and soul where dreams make their bed. ... er something like that. About the CD... With his new debut CD release "When You've Got A Dream", David Gillis has emerged as an artist with a sound that in some ways strikes the familiar yet still remains unique. Hints of John Lennon, Peter Gabriel, Ben Harper, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Bruce Cockburn paint the soundscape. But beneath it all lies a truly distinct and fresh perspective. It's simply deep and inspiring songwriting. The disc has eleven tracks ranging from folk, blues and acoustic rock. The songs are all bound together by a common thread of profound acoustic guitar playing and a voice reminiscent of Jackson Brown. Gillis shows his accomplished "award winning guitaris" side as heard in his solo instrumental cover of "The Theme from Spiderman". At times it sounds as though more than one guitar is playing. When you read the roster of supporting musicians it's simple to understand how the tracks leap from the loud speakers to the soul. Bill Dillon (Sarah McLachlan, Robbie Robertson, Peter Gabriel, Daniel Lanois) weaves wonders on four of the tracks with his orchestral guitar sensibilities. Don Ross (Sony, Narada Records) makes a guest appearance with a haunting performance on Dobro slide guitar. Fergus Marsh (Bruce Cockburn) displays his mastery on the Chapman stick and electric bass while David King (Rapid Transit) lays down balanced and steady grooves on percussion. Top that off with the true harmonic genius of Rob Fekete on keyboards and you've got a world class band.
Band/artist history
Bio Stuff... Born in Hamilton Ontario, this son of a steelworker comes from a rich historical lineage of musicians. His Mother is an award-winning vocalist and his crippled Uncle was a champion fiddler that dominated the Maritime fiddling competition circuit in the 40's and 50's. Constantly surrounded by talent and song by practically every other family member, it would only seem natural for David Gillis to continue in the same tradition. August 2001, he releases his debut CD, ÒWhen YouÕve Got a DreamÓ Recently won 1st place in the Gamble Rogers Fingerstyle Guitar competition on May 4, 2001 held in St. Augustine Florida.
