We ride the borders of folk, pop, rock, jazz, blues and goth. Sweetness is set on edge, in songs about longing, frustration, regret and imaginary moments.
Born an only child in 1974. Named after John Denver's "Darcy Farrow" (an ill-fated mountain girl with a star-crossed love). Began to sing immediately. Grew up in a log cabin in rural Ohio. Developed an affinity for non-human animals and cheese whiz. Danced in her bedroom to the likes of Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Footloose and Flashdance, but still sat cross-legged and ear-phoned in wonder of Donovan, the Doors and the Fab Four. Grew into a mopey, rebellious and hormonal creature who scratched the name "Oscar Schmidt" out of her guitar to write "Robert Smith". Coped with dead-end jobs and rural constriction by applying new formula: words + notes = songs. Born-again experiences listening to Daniel Lanois, Morrissey, Joni Mitchell, PJ Harvey and Jeff Buckley. Moved to NY in 2000 and played the frequent open mic and the occasional gig. Learned from watching a wild variety of artists, namely: Shara Worden, Diane Cluck, Dave Deporis, Randi Russo, Ish Marquez, the Voyces, Mike Ill, Elizabeth Harper, Joan Wasser and Craig Wedren. Back to Ohio in 2002. Met sympatico souls who would further reshape Darcey's work. Sean Haider, bassist extraordinaire, grounds the songs in unforgettable ways. Tom Davis, guitarist and vocalist, haunts the songs with magical versatility and soulful beauty. Mike Ouellette adds dreamlike textures and glossy, memorable riffs. Christian Hardesty, most recent addition, unites the players, solidifies each song, and pushes the limits of the sound. Performing occasionally, writing frequently, searching for signs of creative life constantly.
My parents greatly influenced my taste in music, friends here and there, the musicians I've worked with, and my crash course in underground sound in East Village/the Lower East Side!
