Band/artist history
My music experience began in Jr. High playing trumpet. I stuck with it through college, playing jazz band. During that time I took voice and piano. I discovered my singing voice at that time and started a contemporary Gospel group call Angel Wings. Had a great time and learned a lot about performance. A few years later I was stationed overseas and met up with an experimental music group. I would sit in on sessions and play harmonica and really enjoyed the talent and creativity. One session I sat back and just listened and began writing down some words. I had the guys play through the same tune again while I belted out the lyrics I had just written. They were very excited and that's when Tangent was formed. We worked on all original material for about 7 months and spent a 14 hour session in the studio (an overnight, weekend session was really cheap) and captured the music. We never did anything with it beyond including a couple of the numbers in our cover tune sets, once we started gigging. Once we 'hit-the-road' the name was changed to Towne Kryer. Did mostly 60's and 70's classic/hard rock. Came back to the States and met a singer/songwriter/guitarist. I had never seen or heard anything like this before. It was the late 80's and I knew nothing of sequencers. He asked me to engineer one of his park concerts in Boise and I was impressed. To see and hear this guy play/sing and used sequenced synth-based backing tracks so smoothly..and it sound sooo good...I had to get one. I bought an old Ensoniq workstation with an 8 track sequencer, garage sale reel-to-reel, mixer and a decent cassette deck and began writing and recording. Since that time, I've produced 2 albums and 3 singles for other folks. I have released 1 Contemporary Christian/Gospel CD (Someone Is Listening) and 2 instrumental CDs (Blue Rain and Off the Cuff) and working on a third. Just started web based business www.atticmusic-and-film.com as another outlet for my creative endeavours.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Not in a long time. Lots of great live performance memories, though.
Your musical influences
My taste for musical styles are defined by 'classical' talent and performance sincerity. Pat Matheny, Phil Keaggy, Petra, Rush, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Jean LucPonte, Chuck Greenberg, Stravinski, Chopin, Jim Croce, Joe Satriani to name a few.
What equipment do you use?
My arsenal is small but adequate: Korg Triton Le and recently added M3. Recording: Korg D3200 Digital Multitrack, Sony Mini-Disc for mastering. Lexicon and Behringer outboard FX, Sennheiser, Shure and AKG mics.
Anything else?
Don't ever give up your passion for music. There are lots of measuring sticks for success, but always enjoy what you do with your music. Music may just be a vehicle for your passion...playing, singing, writing words, mixing, recording...just keep it real.
