Broken Broken
Fans and media have praised Curse Icon for their distinct melding of elegant melodies, captivating vocals, and pounding rhythm. They are a dark-edged power group whose essence is defined by hauntingly dynamic vocals and rich sonic textures. With a unique style that bridges alternative, metal, and industrial genres, they shine in an otherwise bleak wave of todays prepackaged music. Their songs are melodic and structured, embracing lyrics as a focal point. From the ambitious sensibility of Broken, to the melancholy surmise of Down, they have found a niche that sets them ahead of the curve. Its their powerful live show however, that burns a lasting impression upon the audiences mind.
One cannot doubt the passion and power that embodies a Curse Icon performance. They take you from heaven to hell in under an hour. It is high-energy, engaging, and blissfully entertaining. Curse Icon has breathed new life into the Independent music scene by combining a do-it-yourself mentality, a musical sensibility, and and a compelling live show. Drawing on a myriad of influences, including bands like Sevendust, Disturbed, Skillett, Breaking Benjamin, Red, Stabbing Westward, Nine Inch Nails, Linkin Park, Evanesence, Flyleaf and Lacuna Coil, Curse Icon delivers a kick in the teeth that leaves you wanting more.
Put Pat Benatar into a metal blender, pour in some nails, then sprinkle it with daisy petals and you have lead singer Kiana. She is mesmerizing; bad-ass and sexy at the same time. Her dynamic vocals complement the bands epic music by adding a refined attitude that is innovative, yet reminiscent of past rock goddesses. Her sensual concoction of power and melody intoxicates listeners as Guitarists Jason and Matt (aka "Legend") brings an aggressive assault to Curse Icons dynamic sound. The ryhthm core features Bass Player James who delivers a solid kick in the chest while Drummer Marco combines acoustic percussion with a mix of synth, loops and samples in an alluring pulse of rhythm. Together they weave their hard-hitting laments into a tight, marketable and cohesive sound.
Curse Icons release paradismal was nominated for best new album along with Nonpoint and other national artists in the 2005 Hard Rock Music Awards. They were one of the few regional acts selected to perform at 103.1 FM The Buzz Bake Sale with Korn, Sevendust, Nonpoint, The Used, New Found Glory, Story of the Year, and others in West Palm Beach, Florida. Curse Icons songs have been featured in independent movies, trailers, and other various broadcasts including Pro Wrestling Ohios TV broadcasts. Curse Icon won xXxRadios Best New Artist on an Independent Label in a peer voting contest. Curse Icon has been named the Best Local Rock Band and lead singer Kiana was named the Best Female Vocalist in South Floridas New Times Readers Choice awards. They are regularly featured on numerous radio stations, including 94.9 Zeta (WZTA) and 103.1 The Buzz (WPBZ), Native Noise on 110.7(WMMS) in Cleveland and many other college, local, and variety shows across the country.
Band/artist history
Curse Icon is a band that was spawned from the ashes. Two friends that were reunited by the love of a sound they had created years before. They are no strangers to the patient virtue of putting together the right mix of talent, personality and songwriting ability. Nor, are they strangers to the painstaking task of writing. "it's a labor of love."
In the past few months, Curse Icon has auditioned numerous guitarists, searching for the right mesh. "Some guys came in, had all the great technique, but didn't quite fit the style or theme of the music. Some guys came in with a great enthusiasm for the music and band, but unfortunately didn't play strongly enough for our powerful, syncopated guitar parts. It's a strange paradox."
After some intense band introspection, Armand and Marco finally decided to look for a lead singer, shifting Armand to the lead guitar spot, as well as doing backing vocals. Enter Kiana. "There is a very sexy quality to the music. I was hooked immediately. I want to do what I can to enhance that quality."
"Kiana brings an energy and excitement to the lead vocals that we weren't able to achieve before. Armand was so restricted trying to play the bulk of the guitar parts and could never truly concentrate on his vocals. We've always intended him to be playing a more supporting role in the live guitar performance, with the other guitarist taking the bulk of the power and sound. She is an energetic, incredible performer."
Ironic as it may sound, with the decision to shift Armand to lead guitar, and that band given up on finding the right fit for the 2nd guitar position, Icon finally encountered guitarist/songwriter Sean. "Sean brings a new energy and excitement to the sound. Influenced by the Hardcore, Industrial and 90's grunge movements, his playing and writing adds a new dimension to the music, putting the polishing touches on the band's powerul, epic sound.
Curse Icon has been looking for the right mix of talent, attitude, and personality for the last year. "We've been through numerous auditions for guitar, bass and keyboards, looking for that right combination." They acquired keyboardist Leonardo (Leo) Farinas. He started playing piano at the age of 13, and was trained in a classical environment.
Influenced by Trent Reznor, Leo began experimenting with keyboards and the effects that could be achieved with the instrument. He explained, "When I started my first band, I realized that a keyboard player should be diverse. He should have the ability to know his way around the keyboard in both effect AND acoustic playing. Usually, you get one or the other. Trent Reznor is a perfect example being able to produce melodies and great effects, as well as refined and technical acoustic piano playing."
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Our live performance is our strength. We feel that the live presentation should ultimately be more powerful than what is on the record, and we love leaving the audience amazed and wanting more.
There is just such an energy that you can't get anywhere else and when people are loving what we do it makes the hard work so worth it. We have been playing all over Florida, a hopefully expanding nationwide very soon.
Your musical influences
Since we all call from various musical backgrounds, there are a lot of influences, but primarily we have been compared to Stabbing Westward, Nine Inch Nails, etc.
What equipment do you use?
We have guitars, and acoustic drums, but we also use a lot of keys and samples, using Roland, Korg, and a variety of software to create unique sounds and loops.
Anything else?
With all of this excitment, it's hard for us to contain it's enthusiam. As expressed in our live performances, you can feel the building dynamic of a band on the rise. You can also see that we are convinced, and committed, because we truly believe in what we are doing and in the direction we are heading!
