Mmy name is Chris Gomez. Im a songwriter from Houston, TX. However, a good amount of folks know me from the RGV. Recently, I also started OjaLa, a norteno group here in Houston, with my cousin Jesse.
Band/artist history
A little long but, here's why I'm a songwriter today....
Well, I originally started writing short stories for my 7th grade English teacher Mr Rhodes, who used to say he'd get a kick out of my journals and other papers. My mom found out I was into writing and encouraged it too. By 9th grade, I was writing poems to impress the ladies. I was in love with one girl at that age. But we only messed around when we were in 8th grade. She inspired many of the first songs. However, if a girl tells u I wrote her a song in high school, BELIEVE HER. Jajaja
The summer after 9th grade, my dad introduced the accordion to me, and I realized I could add accordion to my poems to make them sound cool. I mean, I was going to 10th grade, if I wanted to impress the ladies I was gonna have to step it up. jajaja
My first songs I ever "sold" were to friends, who would then give them to girls at our school and say they wrote it. It made me seem cool to them. LoL
Big famous singers tend to say stuff like, "I started singing at the age of 3", but didnt actually , until later in life. Therefore, my first song was written when I was 14. Eventhough, there was a melody and lyrics, I feel so cheesy when I listen to that older stuff. jajaja
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Well Im always calling someone whenever I write new song. So if singing over the phone counts as a live performance, then ALL THE TIME. And well now, practicing with Jesse and Eddie and OJALA. OJALA we can find a new accordion player. LoL
Your musical influences
Im very much into singer-songwriters. Of all time, all genres. Anybody can sing. But when you can get up there and sing it yourself, thats something else. Leo Dan, Juan Gabriel, Luis Padilla, Ana Gabriel, John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Brian McKnight, Babyface, Billy Joel, Don Henley, Roy Orbison. These are some of the names that continue to inspire me to this day.
What equipment do you use?
Pen and paper. I have several "journals" that have followed me several years. They're full of songs and scribbles. As far as recording, I record using everything the station allows me. Cool Edit Pro mainly.
Anything else?
I hope you like my songs and welcome them with a warm heart. A million thanks in advance for taking the time out to listen to them and checking out my page. I do this for me. But always remember that I do it, with you in mind.
