"The name "Calico Drive" comes from the street in Sherwood Park that I grew up on, and where Matthew and I first started making music. We used to pack about 80 kids in the basement on lunch hours when we were in Jr. High and have punk shows, Matt would skip school to come in from Fort Saskatchewan, he would somehow convince his Dad that playing a show was more important. Calico Drive is really the epitomy of all those little shows we used to play, It's the project we've all been working towards."
Andrew - Calico Drive
Calico Drive started out with three friends from the Sherwood Park and Fort Saskatchewan cities just east of Edmonton, AB Canada. In May '03 these three decided to take their music dreams a little more seriously. Andrew Scott, Matt Frey and Josh Aabak had been playing in bands, some together, some not (Suburban Rise, Prime Cut, FLG, Days like Decades, Snewb) all through junior high and high school. After high school they were all on seperate tracks with Matt pursuing his music in California (Turnaround), and Josh and Andrew doing various other projects around Edmonton (After the Rocket, Words Spoken).
Andrew and Matthew had been best friends growing up, but with both being primarily drummers, they hadn't collaborated on any serious music projects together. But once Andrew and Josh had decided to re-unite musically Matthew was the natural choice to be the drummer, so it was decided for Andrew to pick up the microphone. Mitch James was a natural addition being an amazing singer, songwriter, and guitarist who had grown up with the guys and collaborated with them all on different occasions.
The band began writing songs and practicing until they found Dan Johnson (T-burds, Final Warning) to play bass and they immediately went into the studio to record their 1st 3-song Demo in June '03. Dan brought experience and extreme Hotness to the band so they were all happy. But soon after he joined, Mitch left to pursue other interests.
The band began playing shows and writing songs with Josh as the sole guitarist. They eventually made their way down to California while touring to record a six track E.P. in September '03 at Love Juice Labs in Riverside.
Once home from the tour, the face of Calico Drive would change once again. With Josh leaving, it left the way for Robb Chalifoux and Miles Holmwood (Oceans Away, Afraid of Rockets) to join on guitars. The new face of Calico Drive is one that is here to stay. It has brought the added element of a high energy live show, and new influences to the songwriting. The original drive and goals of the band remain the same. but it is now loaded with a few more weapons in the repertoire. Calico Drive is planning to keep making the live show the primary focus of the band, while writing songs from the heart and building lasting friendships through the music they share togetherHave you performed in front of an audience? We play alot, we tour alot
