"Bucky Dent rocks"
-Chicago Tribune 4/5/2000
"The artsy-but enthusiastic indie power pop on Bucky Dent's demo tape seems
just as likely to create jolly drunks as mean ones-and that would be a nice change around here."
-Chicago Reader 2/10/98Band/artist history
Formed in the basement of a Chicago coachouse in 1996, Bucky Dent hit the burgeoning local underground pop-rock scene as a trio with the self-released Pony 7-inch and a high-energy set chock full of feel-good, sound-effects laden, original rock and roll. Early gigs with a network of local bands (Today's My Super Spaceout Day, Cats & Jammers, Box-O-Car, Minim, The Cells, Jupiter Down) promoted by Beluga Records at Wicker Park's infamous ‘Big Horse’ Taco Stand, and ambitious house parties at Bucky HQ paved the way for steady shows at Chicago's famed four: Lounge Ax, Metro, Double Door, and Empty Bottle (Bucky Dent was asked to play Lounge Ax one last time in December '99, just weeks before new building owners shut down the club). After two more demos, 1997's Here Is How You Will Fly Your Plane and 1998's Raketapisztoly, ("artsy but enthusiastic indie power pop") Bucky Dent garnered local radio support from WXRT and Q101, while Monica Kendrick from the Chicago Reader verified the "playful sense of drive at work that should lift spirits."
1998 saw the release of the demo-song "Walking Like An Agent" on the double-CD Beluga Records compilation Beluga...On The Rocks Volume 2 (belugarecords.com). The year also saw the addition of a new member to the always evolving Bucky Dent, filling the wide-ranging position of keyboards and double drums. The quartet hit the studio yet again in 1999 to record the more mature, self-released, self-titled Bucky Dent CD. The 13-song opus introduces a softer, more melodic and psychoactive side to Bucky Dent, with the quartet leaving behind sound-effects sampling for more instrument driven noise. Alongside the spirited indie anthems of "On the Hajj," "Driver," and "Punch 56" lies the swelling melodies and mechanized drum work of "Temple" and "Truckhouse," the boppy organic energy of "Crowd Control," and the textured rhythm and lyrical innocence of "Sunday's Cheek."Bucky Dent took its show on the road in 1999 with a small Midwest tour including Detroit, Milwaukee and Madison, WI and were joined by friends Busker Soundcheck in Springfield and Charleston, IL. The band is booking more shows across the Midwest and plans are for a spring/summer tour of the east coast.
Bucky Dent hit the studio one last time in 1999 to record the previously unreleased Failures in Architecture for volume 3 of the Beluga...On The Rocks double-disc series released in December of 1999. The band was also asked to record a cover song for the soundtrack of independent film, Porn, produced by techno-rocker Moby, due out later in 2000. The session churned out a chilling and measured version of the Christmas classic "Silver Bells," Bucky's only cover song in a repertoire of 30+ songs. The year of Rock2000 promises Internet releases, increased touring, and more spirited, original rock from Bucky Dent.Have you performed in front of an audience?Venues within Chicago include: Lounge Ax, Metro, Double Door, Empty Bottle, Beat Kitchen, Fireside Bowl, and, of course, the Big Horse.
Outside of Chicago, Bucky Dent has played venues in Madison and Milwaukee, WI, Springfield and Charleston IL, and Detroit MI.
