Broken City Skyline formed late 2003 with an original line up of
Ross Whitehead Vocals
Alun Bowen Lead Guitar
Chris Lawrence - Rhythm Guitar
Stephen Badman Bass
Kingsley Davies Drums
This line up was thought to be ideal with every member bringing slightly different influences into the blend. A mixture of 60’s/70’s rock, hardcore, emo, punk, and metal. Progress was slow, even with two practices a week; finally two solid songs were born:
Lies And Spies, The first creation, on an acoustic in kingsley’s garage.
Send A Message, quite a rocky number with traces of 80’s stuff going on.
On January the 14th 2004 came the bands first gig, at Chris’ 17th birthday In The Brunel Arms, Pont y clun. Unfortunately Stephen was unable to attend due to prior commitments. 3 days before the bash Ross left the band claiming he was unable to attend every practice. Things weren’t looking good
With three days in which to find a replacement vocalist and bassist, the band jostled positions. Chris Moved to front man while the band loaned in the bassist from the other performers on the night, Nik South. Craig Beavis also completed the line up on rhythm guitar.
The set list for that night was mainly covers. Although not the most musically perfect evening ever, everyone who was there got absolutely hammered and had a great night! Including one Adam Jordan who had famously drunk “3 double vodka’s and coke, 5 singles and now i'm gonna drink them straight” needless to say he spewed all over the toilets! Who’d have thought, that one of the boys who stepped up to play a cover that night would play such an important role in the bands future
It all went pretty quiet after that for a period of time, what with the breaking of kingsley’s arm in Austria. The band still plugged away producing two more songs, dressed in blood and desperate search. All that was needed then was one more song for the band to begin gigging regularly, oh and a bassist of course!
At the beginning of summer 2004, Anthony Williams was introduced as the bands new bassist. Although he had no prior experience of being in a band, or playing bass, (hell, at the time, no-one knew what he could do!) But one thing for sure was, that Tony was willing to learn.
The wheel began turning again and the opportunity to play the Tollhouse arose. Who could refuse?! In the space of 24hrs the band got ready for the climax of they’re so far short career. The very next day they played in Bettws, and so began they’re friendship with Black River Arts Promotions Company.
Now the gigs had slowly started becoming more and more consistent. Notably some of the venues included Porthcawl Pavilion and The Berwyn Centre in Nant y Moel. With each performance Broken City Skyline became more and more confident (apart from Tony, who liked (and to this very day still likes!) to get drunk before playing to settle the nerves!!!)
Sadly after the gig in the Berwyn centre, Kingsley decided to break his ties with the band. This left the band with an awkward task, to search for the dying breed, aka the drummer. Fortunately the band was booked for a date with destiny when a certain Rhys Izzard arranged a gig in the Sultan Emperor (an Indian Restaurant, of all places!). From what had seemed a doomed venture with no drummer, Ryan, from a local band (underscore (RIP?)) stepped behind the kit. Even with only one practice under they’re belts they pulled it off, everything fitted into place.Nowadays Ryan has become a fully fledged member of B.C.S.L.
The band have to-date, played numerous gigs since including a very important gig in Heol-y-cyw rugby club, in aid of the Joshua foundation, which is a cause the band continue to support, and with this, B.C.S.L’s love affair (particularly Chris’) with the club had started, and has since become the bands HQ for many a local gig, with plenty more to come
In April Chris left the band, with Dewi joining as the new singer. With Dewi able to pick up the songs there was no need to stop giging and the band didnt miss a beat. With many gigs coming up, the band are all realy exited and looking forward to the next year.Have you performed in front of an audience? We play as many gigs as we can. In the past we have played in The Tool House, The Tuskers and Toms.
