Band/artist history
I come from a very musical family. I was raised on classical, jazz, and mannheim steamroller -- total synthesizer madness. most of my relatives play or played an instrument at one time or another. I initially fell for modern rock, eventually progressing to classic rock and other genres, finding that I just liked music period. along with this, I had a natural skill with computers and other electronics. I digested books like william gibson's neuromancer and neal stephenson's snow crash . in the mid 90s, I began to hear snippets of electronic music here and there. the crystal method, the prodigy, the chemical brothers, nine inch nails and other mainstream electronic artists introduced me to the alien landscape of synthetic music. I still listen to lots of music from all kinds of genres, from reggae to hip hop, funk to ambient. however, I feel that music made with traditional, organic instruments sometimes sounds homogenous when compared to the sonic debautchery I hear in electronic music. sometime around 1998, I discovered what was left of the demoscene and began experimenting with computer music by remixing and resampling old tracker mods in FastTracker 2, namely those of ian lyman, a.k.a. scirocco, formerly of night 55 and team sonique. I bought a used yamaha cs1x control synthsizer and began tracking original compositions. I had found the ultimate marriage; computers and music, my two favorite things in the world. in june, 2000, I moved to orlando, fl to attend full sail university for a recording arts degree. it was here that I was properly introduced to the rave scene and turned on to lots of new music. my first amateur quality tracks came about in late 2000 and early 2001, my imagination being sparked by all the events that were transpiring around me. now that I know what I'm capable of and I can stop tweaking and re-tweaking these old tracks, I intend to focus all my energy into creating a multimedia project. hindsight allows me to see how one chapter leads to another so perfectly that I am in utter disbelief. that's what unbelievable is all about, the fantastic possiblities of life on this planet.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
now that unbelievable's done, and I actually have material to , getting booked is my top priority because to be honest, noone knows who I am.
Your musical influences
hybrid, the crystal method, the chemical brothers, the prodigy, bt, orbital, the orb, digital assasins, deepsky, leftfield, paul van dyk, uberzone, cj bolland, future sound of london, fatboy slim, ozric tentacles, eat static, shpongle, juno reactor, apollo 440, propellerheads, praga khan, brian eno, trip theory, spacetime continuum, underworld, dj shadow, ltj bukem, massive attack, aphex twin, dj icey, and many more...
What equipment do you use?
synthesis - access virus kb, yamaha cs1x, reason sampling/editing/sequencing - cool edit pro, reason graphics/video/html - sony dcr-trv240 digital video camera, photoshop, bryce, ultrafractal, premiere, after effects, golive the cs1x goes through the virus for effects or vocoding, the virus goes into the computer, cs1x is master control keyboard for midi software like reason. typically, I record samples from my virus or cs1x into cool edit, then load them into a tracker and sequence them there. I just upgraded my studio, so production quality is improved greatly. eventually, I'll release a couple music videos as well, so stay tuned.
Anything else?
the philosophy - like most art, there's a philosophy behind the bitsmart experience project. I like to let the art speak for itself, but I feel you'll understand it better if you have a basic idea of what fuels its creation. the name bitsmart comes from computer programming, the concept of bitwise operators. switch 'smart' for 'wise' and you have bitsmart. this alludes to my belief that a symbiotic relationship between humans and machines will carry humanity into the next era, provided we can learn to use it responsibly. then there's the spiritual aspect of bitsmart. music makes me feel spiritual, it's a deep, primal connection. music teaches me to be in the moment, not thinking, but feeling. there's also a sense of hope, and a belief that humanity will not blow themselves up, that people are inherently good, and that life on Earth still holds many fantastic possibilities for us. I try to give others this same experience through my music. finally, there's the psychedelic aspect to bitsmart. psychedelia is a very vague concept, of which drugs are only a small part. people may have difficulty verbalizing what psychedelia is all about, but they know it instantly when they hear or see it. bitsmart was written to be headphone music, designed for couch tripping. my suggestion would be for the listener to, at least once, listen to bitsmart with headphones on, eyes closed, sitting or lying comfortably in a dark room with no distractions. that is what the bitsmart experience project is all about.
