Billi D:
-plays her voice and the pen she uses to write songs.
-is a mix of jazz, hip hop, soul and electronica/down tempo/trip hop.
-will soothe you with her voice and simultaneously make your head nod to the beats her friends so carefully craft. and as you hum the lyrics on the way home after a show or in your car on a road trip you will have realized that she will also make you think.
-will let you buy her a drink after she sings.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes! I love to play live with my homeboys S2, Blackdaylight, Scottfree and Free Dimensional. Most recently we've played at the Darkroom, Morseland and Funky Buddha Lounge. In the past we've rocked out at the Elastic Arts Foundation, Echo Chamber events and various festivals.
Your musical influences
Soul, jazz, electronica, trip hop, hip hop, rock and world. I grew up singing Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald and listening to Aretha, the Spinners, the O'Jays, Earth Wind & Fire, Franky Beverly & Maze, Barry White, jams on the R&B, jazz and rap stations in Ohio and Anita Baker. Amongst others are Amel Larrieux, Sade, S2's mom Ms. Laughlin, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fiona Apple, Fela and Femi Kuti, Ali Farka Toure, Prefuse73 and the whole of his Eastern Developments label, Stan Getz, Seu Jorge. The whole "neo-soul" movement in the late 90s/early 2g's had a large effect on my vocal stylings (The Roots, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Common, Blackstar, D'Angelo, Bilal, Slum Village, etc), Bobby Marley, Manu Chao, Papashanti, Corinne Bailey Ray, Tiombe Lockhart is one of my newest favorites. I developed a love for Portishead and Morcheeba during my freshman year of college. I'm really not a music snob; it can be from any and every genre as long as I feel it.
What equipment do you use?
Other peoples. HA. I'm actually long into getting a Shure Beta-58. I also have Fruity Loops on my computer so I can begin to make beats. The vocal chords crafted from my very own DNA is probably the most important equipment I use.
Anything else?
.It's Whatever Billi Wants.
