Band/artist history
Born of musician parents EZRA vancil discovered his (love of/ interest in) music traveling from town to town at an early age. Calling Dallas home, EZRA cameto be, himself, an accomplished songwriter and vocalist finding the roots ofhis influences in early folk, country and gospel. As a teenager EZRA vancil started the critically acclaimed band Gypsy Tree. Led by EZRA's mature songwritingand soulful vocal style, the band, with their unique mix of folk and rock, wasable to achieve moderate regional success as well as a solid fan base. As their popularity grew, their music even found interest in a management team from LA. Although the band was short lived, the relationship between EZRA and his management team survived. While his love of music still remained and with backing from his management still intact, Ezra sought out to record a new solo project "Closer" in various studios both in LA and the Dallas area. Based on the recommendation of friends from within the local music community, EZRA opted for additional instrumental help on some of the finishing touches on the album from percussionist / aaron THOMAS. aaron THOMAS born and raised in New Orleans aaron found himself uprooted when his family moved to Dallas during his final highschool years. As a consolation gift and although with no music interest at this time aaron THOMAS was given a set of drums to fill his now isolated summer. With the passing of each day, interest in the instrument grew and an unshakeable love for music was established. Desiring more, aaron studied music in college receiving instruction from both Baylor and North Texas University percussionist while simultaneously receiving a degree in studio recording technology. During his college years aaron played in many local groups, most of which were a little on the artsy side but that kept him well rehearsed between any freelance studio gigs that might come along. After the two met and worked together on EZRA's solo album, they realized each brought to the table influences, that on their own weren't quite able to achieve in projects past. From their collaboration sparked such groups as TRAVEL BY FOOT, BUCK 50 AND DOGMA and THE UNIVERSE. All reached local success in their own genre of music. Up until this point the two with the help of band mates have recorded many songs in aaron's project studio but none that reached the level that EZRA vancil / and / aaron Thomas knew the songs had potential of. This frustration only drove the two to work harder. After two years of collaboration on many many new songs, the two emerged with nearly 20 songs they felt really strong about. Taking no chances they decided to seek out a producer with a successful track record that could help them birth their new group EZRA THOMAS. Producer Mark Hallman stood heads and shoulders above the list. With 30+ years of music, songwriting and producing experience performing with and or recording and producing such music icons as Carole King and Ani DiFranco etc. and even being a Texas boy, the choice was easy. If only they could convince him of the same. After a brief meeting Mr. Hallman expressed his interest in the raw but mature sound of the music and his desire to help them achieve their true potential. EZRA THOMAS recorded the bulk of the tracks at aaron's project studio "Hear no Evil" with the help of one of the original members of Dogma and the Universe, electric guitarist Matt Talbert. After the raw tracks were completed, they were taken to be produced and mixed at Mark Hallman's studio "the Congress house".This turned out to be the right ingredients to making something other than the old cookie cutter album. It was something they were truly proud of.
