Tonight Is My Night Tonight Is My Night

Dance

A self-admitted “retro junkie” who hails from Washington DC, Onyx Nightshade draws inspiration from the diverse club scene from the 80s and 90s and injects his own modern twist. Likely a reflection of his multicultural upbringing, Onyx especially likes to blur the genre line. Ambient, jazz, electro, and house can (and sometimes do) all co-exist in the same song. But that’s only to be expected when one’s influences range from Kraftwerk to Kim Waters to Kevin Yost. A champion of the DIY aesthetic from day one, Onyx began learning the ins and outs of producing in his father’s home studio at the tender age of 14. Since cutting his remixing teeth in 2005, Onyx has commissioned remixes for Mark Croft, Madison Park, Distorted Reality, and even the legendary Herb Alpert, just to name a few. As a remixer, Onyx is known for giving a song an entirely new face. He is not above doing a house remix to an indie rock number or turning a club-thumping dance anthem into a slow burning, sensual R&B groove. Onyx’s current release, “Tonight Is My Night,” marks the debut of Onyx Nightshade as an artist in his own right. The single, due for release in October 2009, also marks Onyx’s return to the realm of electro since his 2005 remix of Mark Croft’s “Don’t Speak.” This time around, though, Onyx is calling all the shots.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
I haven't played live yet. My kind of music isn't exactly stuff you could play live, as is the case with most EDM artists. That's why so many of them turn to DJing as a second skill. I don't know how to DJ at the moment, but I'm learning.
