Band/artist history
The Basketball arena is my kingdom, as would say the MC known as King. Even though he was gifted for the sport (he even made it to the NCAA), he traded the ball for the mic, but kept the name they gave him on the court. In 1998, his jumpoff track LA GUERRE (The War) started the buzz across the city, and was proclaimed song of the year by Le Kachot, the no 1 Hip Hop radio show at the time. Providing the underground with numerous tracks like the now classic VOUS ÉCOUTEZ(Are U Listening?), he got the competition sweating.
He featured on a couple of local compilations, and came out with a single and video
called PROTÈGE LE GHETTO (Protect The Ghetto). The video was shot in Montreal-
North and showed a very graphic picture of the environment. Musique Plus )the local music TV station) gave it close to no spin.
But the major turn of his career was in 2001, when the tape for his second video RIEN N'A CHANGÉ (Nothing Has Changed) was seized by the police and banned from Musique Plus because of the alledged presence of gang members in the clip. While National TV and local newspapers were obviously busy giving King a bad rep, he and his producer Mr. Vane released independently Summer Slam Vol.1, a 6 track EP which was a huge success due to the controversy and the way the album was distrbuted. Instead of placing it at retail music stores like HMV, he opted for the Hip Hop specialized stores to bring the heat to the masses.
He recently released Summer Slam Vol. 2, another classic (he calls it half way between a mixtape and an actual album). According to the local newspaper ICI giving it a 9/10. Takin a cue from the american MCs, he plans on putting out Vol. 3 before the end of the year, and consolidate his grip on the streets with Vol. 4 at the top of next year.
He plans on coming out with an album, but right now hes in no rush. The album will come out when the right platform wil be in place. The labels here dont know or dont want to market our stuff the right way so for now, well do it ourselves until something interesting pops up. Plus we makin tons of independant cash right now, why mess that up?. Are you listening?
