Jupiter's Thigh is an eclectic and unique alternative rock band from Colorado. This quartet of seasoned musicians and songwriters is known for their explosive live performances as well as the breadth of their musical palette, which encompasses everything from folk and pop to heavy metal and punk. They have dubbed their brand of sprawling, lyric-intensive music "Literary Rock," which may or may not be an oxymoron but which accurately desribes JT's style and sensibility. Fiercely independent, Jupiter's Thigh believes fervently in the power of DIY Indie Music.
Band/artist history
Guitarist/bassist Nathaniel Incorporated, vocalist/bassist/keyboardist Danielle Haakinson and drummer Neal Babcock were once in a band called Pontoon which died a nasty yet not wholly undeserved death, at which point they recruited guitarist/bassist Andy Liss and formed Jupiter's Thigh. They suffered for months in an unheated storage shed, writing and rehearsing new songs. Eventually, they moved to a more suitable rehearsal space and began recording songs on a beat-up 4-track so they could have demo CDs to hand out to clubs, but after receiving rave reviews for the demo CDs, they decided to spruce up the recordings and release them as a full album. The result was "Under Lily Skin," a 14 song CD released in November 1999 through Hapi Skratch Records. It's a triumph of lo-fi, DIY attitude, featuring great songs and production values that expand the limits of what can be done with a 4-track cassette machine, a couple of microphones and a whole lot of imagination.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Jupiter's Thigh is definitely at our best live. We play frequently in and around the state of Colorado, and are planning upcoming tours to other parts of the US.
Your musical influences
Jupiter's Thigh has been influenced by many artists, including Bob Dylan, Rush, Garbage, Richard Thompson, Concrete Blonde, The Pixies, Velvet Underground, Throwing Muses, Grant Lee Buffalo, Dixie Dregs and Radiohead. They also draw liberally from classic and contemporary literature, art and film, and incorporate these influences in their music in strange and original ways.
What equipment do you use?
Jupiter's Thigh's debut CD, "Under Lily Skin," was recorded in our rehearsal space and Inc's bedroom using an ancient 4-track cassette recorder with only 3 working tracks. It's a triumph of lo-fi resourcefulness. Mixed & mastered at Pasqua Studios.

alright... Fiskadoro was really good. I love the chorus (although I speak no spanish... it just sounds good. very pixies-ish). Styrofoam was also good and for some reason it makes me think of monty python?!?! My favorite however (musically) was Kayleigh... yes for the guitars. I am not a screaming drunk, but the guitars just plain kicked ass! Excellent. The only thing I noticed was that the vocals need to be smoothed out a bit. Perhaps some slight compression? maybe taken down a decible or two? Anyway, that's my take. Overall some really good stuff here. Let me know when and where you're playing, as I live in Denver also. Check out my band here on SoundClick and have a super day...
