Jim Felhofer and Tom Dupuis first met in the summer of 1990 when they both worked at the same publishing company. Along with Claude Chmiel (another co-worker from that same company), they soon discovered a common interest in music. They shared an appreciation of the harmonies of The Beatles and Jayhawks, the musicianship of Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan, the melodic pop sounds of Nick Lowe and R.E.M, and the storytelling qualities of Steve Earl and Willie Nelson.
Felhofer was already a talented guitar player who owned an impressive collection of acoustic and electric guitars. Chmiel, too, was an accomplished musician who had a history of playing in bands. Dupuis, on the other hand, was a self-taught beginner who had recently purchased his first acoustic guitar for $150, which Felhofer affectionately referred to as the baseball bat.
But around other guitar players, Dupuis always considered himself a singer. It didnt take long before Felhofer and Dupuis realized their vocals blended well together during weekend jam sessions that took place the following winter. With Chmiels experienced direction, they began what would eventually develop into rehearsals.
After years of entertaining in living rooms and house parties, the co-workers decided it was time for the next big step: A paying gig. But first, they needed to come up with a name for their band. They decided to call themselves The Fret Boys (as in a guitar fret, get it?). They were booked to play New Years Eve at a local supper club. Thinking it would be the perfect venue for their acoustic renditions, they began their first set as professional musicians. Little did they know by midnight this quaint supper club would evolve into a loud tavern complete with drunken hecklers. The Fret Boys were overwhelmed and under amplified.
The experience caused the Boys to re-evaluate their goals and become a legitimate bar band. Chmiel picked up the bass, Dupuis took up the drums, and Felhofer plugged in. Because of their years of practice, the band was as tight as ever. Chmiel became a solid rhythmic bass player. Dupuis was a natural drummer who lost nothing vocally. And Felhofer utilized his acoustic skills to bring out a full lead guitar sound. Along with their unique harmonies, The Fret Boys developed into a rock band to be reckoned with.
But, as with many things in life, the charm eventually wore off. After years of second-rate gigs, a lack of enthusiasm developed and The Fret Boys decided to call it quits. They sold their stage equipment, shook hands and soaked in the memories.
However, both Felhofer and Dupuis soon realized that although one musical door had closed, another door of opportunity had suddenly opened. They now had time to pursue their interest in writing and recording original songs. They began purchasing home recording equipment, Felhofer converted his basement into what would eventually become Fret Boy Studios, and the duo went to work.
Felhofer and Dupuis now call themselves The Narrators, and their first CD, Chapter One, is undoubtedly the truest form of independent music. They wrote the songs, played all the instruments used in the recordings, and mixed each song to produce the finished tracks.
