Boston based record label 2Gutta is known for putting out music that represents one’s character and self expression. For the artist under 2Gutta label, they feel it is necessary to bring it back to the old days of hip hop, when lyrics were real and not about who has more money, the hottest cars, and picking up hoes at the bar. “There’s a lot of bullshit; a lot of dancing going on (in hip-hop) today and we’re trying to our music true to us”, coming from Triple Threat rapper and 2Gutta co-founder Ren “the General”. “I don’t like to force anything in my music, I like to keep it gutta, but at the same time, make a song that the ladies can listen too. I am versatile when it comes to music”. Ren has a certain swagger about himself that differentiates him from others. “I like medium tempo beats so I can be as detailed as possible. I am not a punch line artist, I just speak about real shit”. In 1996 Ren, Shizz and Atheist 2Gutta’s running mate linked up and formed the idea for the label but the trio was not able to officially launch the label due to prior commitments. In 1998, childhood friends Ren, Brass, and Winnas formed a rap group called Triple Threat. This group rapped, wrote their own rhymes, and produced their own music. “Brass has the ability to make beats and just ride them properly; he knew how to highlight the beats because he made them. He is a problem when it comes to creating different formats,” said Ren Winnas aka the “Gun Slinga” is known for his punch lines and pairs his Boston flow with his Rick Ross voice as he rounds out Triple Threat. Separately these individuals can dominate their fields, with there willingness to conquer and over stand the “rap game” they can easily be the next best three. Collectively they have a chemistry that’s unmatchable. They’ve learned how to stand out on a track and compliment each others flow. In 2007, Triple Threat fled the air waves with two of their singles “Boston Symphony” and “Gotsta Get It”. They also performed at nightclubs and lounges throughout Boston, MA, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. “The Key to making music people want to hear is about catch hooks.” Your lyrics can be raw and “gutta” but if you have a catchy hook, people are going to want to hear it and listen to the lyrics. Due to disloyalty, management issues and fallouts, the Triple Threat and 2Gutta movement went downhill. Ren turned to a loyal friend Shizz to handle the business aspect and take the label to the next level. Shizz claims that young rappers need to know something before they jump into the music industry. “See a lot of these (young) rappers just go into the booth, start rapping, and that’s it. I was on the outside looking in when Triple Threat was going through their struggles. You need to know the business side of things such as copyrights, contracts agreements, among other things. With someone to manage the business aspect, 2Gutta is back on track allowing its artist to focus on their music. 2Gutta’s solo artist Atheist “has a straight and untamed flow, and at the same time controversial with his name and subject matter” said Ren. “I’m not trying to bring that controversy to Triple Threat but as a solo artist under 2Gutta, he is free to do or say what he wants. Atheist is due to have his mixtape “Vengeance of God” out soon. Triple Threat is due to have a couple of mixtapes dropping in the neat future. “List of Demands” and “Top of the Food Chain” is due to be released later this year sandwiching Atheist’s mixtape in between the two. Along with the release of the mixtapes, 2Gutta would like its fans to look out for consistency in their work. Ren wants everyone to know that “we got all of the kinks worked out, and no more breaks. We are holding it down for Boston, nah Massachusetts, nah all of New England so hold us down or hold your seat and get ready for the ride!”
