The band was formed in 2006 by Kev Robinson on Vocals and Bass Guitar, Jim McClelland on Lead Guitar, Mike Ellis on Drums, & Johnny Miller on Guitar. The first year was spent writing original material. The band is heavily influenced by guitar based melodic rock, as was produced by the great American rock bands of the 1980's. In the spring and summer of 2007, the band began recording a number of tracks on a digital 8 track studio. The guys had a steep learning curve, as they did all the arrangements, recording, and engineering of the tracks themselves, and for the first time. Ten of what the band thought were their best tracks were selected, and put onto their debut CD titled, Razors' Edge. 'Razors' Edge' was well received, the sound of the album was flatteringly compared to fellow Cumbrian band 'It Bites'. A lot of this was down to guitar maestro, Johnny Miller, whose playing style is not unlike Francis Dunnery. Tracks from the CD were put on the local radio stations 'unsigned' page. The first track from the CD, 'She's Complicated' , hit the top of the 'Unsigned Chart', and Skinwalker became the first local band to be featured on Cumbria's CFM radio station. Sadly, due to work committments, Johnny had to leave the band in late 2007, but his shoes were ably filled by Paul Doherty. In January 2008 the line up was complete when Jeff Downey joined the band on Keyboards. Work was started immediately on material for the second CD. The band had a brief break in the summer of 2008 to play a few select gigs. The highlights being a headlining slot at the Brickyard in Carlisle, Maryport Blues Festival, and The White Mare Rock Festival. Then it was back to the studio. With all the recording done, again the band took a break from the studio to compete in the Maryport Blues Festival Battle of the Bands. The band got to the final in 2009, which is a testament to the strength of their songs, as they are the only band to have ever achieved this playing their own material. In summer 2009 the bands second CD titled 'Ong's Hat' was finished. This album has a bigger, more aggressive sound than 'Razor's Edge', but still sticks to their roots of foot stomping rock songs, with anthemic choruses. The band are currently working on a live set for a few festival dates this year, and new material.
Band/artist history
Formed in Summer 2006. By Kev, Jim, and Mike. The band were joined by good friend Johnny Miller, on guitar, in late 2006. The band spent the remainder of 2006 and 2007 writing and recording. Johnny left in late 2007, due to work commitments. Paul joined on guitar in October 2007 and the line up was completed in January 2008, when Jeff took up the Keyboard job.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
We've played a few of the festivals in Cumbria, but it's hard getting gigs doing original material. All people seem to want is pubrock covers bands :(
Your musical influences
We have a wide range of influences including : It Bites, Thin Lizzy, The Who, Journey, Big Country, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Ramones, Pat Travers, Bon Jovi, Thunder, Crowded House, Police
What equipment do you use?
Anything we can get our hands on.
Anything else?
We would like to urge the powers that be to support original bands!! If Simon Cowbell had been around earlier there would have been no Elvis Presley, no Beatles, no Led Zeppelin, no Queen, no Sex Pistols, no Ramones, no The Who, just a bunch of plastic, faceless, lap dogs, modelled in Cowbells image. LET THERE BE ROCK!!!
