Abysmalia initiated its career as a one-man-project in 2007 when Jouni Koskela decided to upload an extended play entitled "The Sewage of Lies" featuring songs he'd been putting together so far. Enthused by the relatively positive feedback, he decided to write more material.
Ever since that time, Abysmalia has gained more members (Antti Jylhä on bass guitar in 2008 and Marko Nikula on clean vocals in 2009) and released three intertwining conceptual full-lengths up-to-date. The music is inspired by the surrounding environment and freedom of self-expression and therefore is not strictly limited to any sub-category of the metal genre.

JK: Abysmalia is strictly a studio project at the moment due to the fact that all permanent members are scattered across Finland.
JK: There's a lot of them, mostly because I tend to subconsciously absorb good elements here and there without particular boundaries. The attempt to not sound like a direct copy of anything is however a conscious choice. If I really had to name a few which have had conscious impact on my songwriting, I'd name The Haunted, Emperor, Thorns, Frost*, Opeth and Meshuggah.
