Band/artist history
Draggan, started as a hobbyist crew of four guys with a taste for hardcore hiphop, in 1994. They had no plan and no experience, just a deep and dark love for the music. After clowning around for a few years, they became serious about developing their skills and expanding a certain theory. The theory being based on the commercial success of artists such as The Notorious BIG and Big Punisher, who maintained a hardcore style while not running away from record sales. Draggan was displeased with the heavy R&B and pop influences in hiphop since the mid ‘90s, being more partial to what was called the ‘New Skool’ style of hiphop in the early ‘90s, when artists such as Redman, Wu-Tang Clan, Onyx, and Organized Konfusion got regular radioplay on hiphop shows. Draggan decided they were going to reinvent this harder, lyric-filled style of hiphop to be suited for a later era. It was now 2002, and a lot had happened. After struggling with their own skills, studying those of others, and juggling with the formation of the group for a few years, Draggan had it boiled down: they were going to learn whatever skills necessary, be influenced by any musical style they like, and they had their line-up set; the group was now three: Magnum - producer, lyricist, webbuilder, and businessman; Titan - DJ, producer, lyricist, and live orchestrator; Kryptik - lyricist, producer, graphics & video editor, and man with the plan. They were now set to do some serious work. Making tracks was their first priority; and to learn this Draggan produced three Eps between 2001 and 2004; a total of 41 tracks, none of which were released. Located in Groningen, in the north of The Netherlands, they knew that gaining exposure would be a formidable task, and that any attention they got would be hard to maintain with the quality of the tracks they had. Draggan set out to cook up an album, make that two albums, to level the playing field. In 2005 and 2006, two albums were planned, written and produced; the first was Kryptik’s solo album, Powered by Pressure, to be released in 2007. The second would be a Draggan group album, Entertain the Thought, to be released later the same year. Draggan would come out swinging two well-made albums, rather than struggling to gain exposure with a mediocre production. The method of releasing their work on their own needed and received some serious thought. Draggan decided they would start their own record company to maintain complete control over their art. They would use the internet for promotion so that distribution would be less of an issue, and so that only the people who were really interested in their music would be exposed to it. The group does not have the manpower to launch large and expensive promotion campaigns on the general public, of which only a portion would be interested in their style of music anyway. “When you have a small group of people, efficiency is the key”, says Magnum. Since September 2006, Draggan have released several video clips online, which have gotten positive reactions. The group’s emphasis on video comes from their love for the medium; “if a picture’s worth a thousand words, film’s worth a thousand pictures, and it has sound” Kryptik likes to say. It has paid off, reactions to the online videos have sparked collaborations and friendships with other artists from around the world, ranging from Eldi Amin (Senegal) to Fish (Netherlands) to The Rebel Scum (Malaysia). In early 2007, the group’s company, Draggan Tracks, was formed. Meant to release Draggan’s music, with the possibility of releasing other artists in the future, the company is making moves in early 2008 with the release of their first album, Kryptik’s “Powered by Pressure.”
