The sixth son of market trader, Ms. Hortense(MS.AUNTY) Johnson, was educated in Jamaica’s public schools between the years of 1975 1985 at Grange Hill Primary and Secondary Schools. Childhood musical influences were Jimmy Cliff, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, and General Trees and King Yellow Man. From the age of 12, Selvie entered in many talent showcases in the parishes of St. Elizabeth and Westmoreland, actually winning the Red Label Talent Showcase at Skateland Grange Hill 1982. I.Recording career began in the year of 1991, with his hit song “Bomboya” featured on compilation album re-released on the Penthouse record label 2005. The next release came with “Get Badda” on the Wild Apache record label. “Little Pickney” was released in 1992 on Zelly Productions record label. “Good Over Evil” on the Too Tough record label was released in the said year and Further recordings were also made in 1992 on the Capricorn and Star Trail record labels. The following year the relation- ship with Xterminator and Blacka Dread record labels began. At Xterminator, Selvie recorded numerous hit singles: “Ah Mi The One”, “See Mi” on the well established Java riddim, “Mama One Son”, the hit duet singles with Twiggy on “Love Motion” and the dancehall classic “Neighborhood Watch” with Luciano. By way of recommendation from Xterminator, Selvie and Blacka Dread recorded many hit songs destined for the U.K. and European market. Amongst these were “Long Time She A Look It” on the Answer riddim, “Hard Core Loving” and “Trim Your Lamp” with Pinchers, Poison Dart and Viceroy. 1994 saw extensive tours around Jamaica with the Xterminator band with Luciano, Mikey General, and Sizzla. 1995 was the year of hiatus for Selvie, where he retreated back to the hills of Westmoreland for sanctity and meditation. 1996 an association with Strike Gold began resulting in multiple concerts in Bermuda and the U.S.A. A series of concerts were held in 1996 1997 in Hamilton, Bermuda promoted by Elmore Warren of Fresh TV Ltd. After a three-month sojourn in the U.S.A returned to Jamaica to continue recording career with XTerminator, but due to differences Selvie left from the Xterminator camp late 1997. Whilst working on varying musical projects in 1998, Selvie became severely ill and spent six months hospitalized, and a further six months in convalescence. 1999 saw the project of relaunching the career of Selvie Wonder by way of an album “Rise Again” on the Strike Gold record label. The project was completed in November ’99 but has yet to be released. Selvie arrived in U.k at the invitation of Rasheart management to commence varying music projects including guest performances at Rodigan’s night - Subterranea , London, The Bungalow Club - Edinburgh, Stratford Rex, Astoria, Forum
N COLLOBORATION with Stingray, Easy Street, G Vibes, Top Secret and Cave recording studio’s (UK), exclusive special / dubplates recordings began & saw unprecedented global subscriptions for the inimitable flavour of the Hype Roller aka Selvie Wonder ultimately leading to the release of GIVE I STRENGTH 7” CHARM RECORD LABEL -BAD BOY RIDDIM. A series of urban reggae / hip hop tracks followed produced in conjunction with Yush2K resulting in European/Global territory CD release on the Yush2k label with the track OUTLAW appearing on 12” SOUL JAZZ record label, Neo Classics Compilation by DJ Takeshi Kubota AVEX label JAPAN. Earnestly production ensued with business partnerships formed for licensing, distribution and retail releases. At this time Mr. Stevens joined the executive board of Rasheart, with full responsibility of the formation of label, A&R and audio & label products/ catalogue. Utilizing the wealth of his 15+years recording the vast potential for composition & creativity was fully realized as Producer. Based in Kingston, Jamaica working with Anchor/Music Works studio, alongside world renowned engineer Stephen Stanley, & highly acclaimed musicianship from Bongo Herman , Dean Fraser, Danny (Firehouse bassist) the conscientious ‘All Nation Riddim’ came into being .
