Whether making out to this music at a friend's party, trying your new dance moves at the Teen Center or the Hide-Out, or just hanging out and groovin' in Shain Park, these songs were ever present. Band/artist history
So you really want to be in a Rock and Roll Band? By Doug Booth Lead Guitarist for The Animal Crackers Our story begins in the early summer of 1966 in the backyard of my home in Birmingham Michigan. Five teenage guys, nearly strangers to one another, were getting together to rehearse and audition for each other. Perhaps if the music sounded just right, these young fellows and I might just form a new Rock and Roll Band. One by one they arrived lugging their equipment from the street into the backyard of my home. You could almost see it in their eyes. Every musician, wondering in his own way, if this might be the group they were searching for. You knowthe right guys with the right sound to make it big in the local music scene. If all went well there was always the possibility of some kind of real fame. The Beatles, Rolling Stones and the Who were young lads that came together and were making history. With the right musicians anything was possible wasnt it? Its been forty years since then, yet I can remember that day as if it happened just a few days ago. It was on a hot June afternoon I had my fingers crossed hoping everyone invited to the band audition would attend. One was a Star of sorts from the band The Soul Survivors. A great lead singer and Bass player with the reputation as the Mick Jagger of the Detroit area. Would he actually show up to play? I didnt really know but he certainly wasnt here yet and already 40 minutes late for the auditions. Now that tall fellow over there with the Sunglasses on the word was hes awesome on the keyboards with a good voice. With all that expensive equipment he must be great I thought. The two other guys, a guitar player and drummer, looked like they were as serious about this audition session as I was. They had some nice gear and they nodded when I asked them if they could also sing. The good vibes and chemistry were there right from the start. The four of us were having a great time as we finished setting up and waited for our star to show up. We became like old friends right away. None of us had any idea that we were about to share a journey in time that would prove to be timeless. Nope, it was just plain hot that afternoon and this so called Star we lined up for today was late for our little rehearsal or (worse) might not show up at all. The word got out and was passed along all week that the great lead singer was headed over to my very backyard to sing with a bunch of new guys. A fair sized crowd of kids had lined up along the side and rear fences, and after waiting for nearly an hour were starting to get restless. When are you guys gonna start playing? Come onlets hear some music! At least play something while youre standing there! Out of the corner of my eye I saw him strutting across the lawn. A long haired guy with his Bass guitar in one hand and cigarette in the other; our Mick Jagger had finally arrived. The crowd fell silent. Now we were going to get started just as soon as he got plugged in. He brought no cool amplifier or microphone or standsjust his Bass guitar, a harmonica, and a noisy patch cord. Richard knew just what to do hooking him up and quickly pointing him to a microphone stand. What will it be guys? What songs do you know how to play he said putting his cigarette out on the patio. We quickly agreed on the Stones song Satisfaction. I hit the first opening guitar riffs and the band instantly came alive. Passionate hard driving rock and roll moving the song along like none of us had ever done before. Lots of looks and smiles were exchanged among us as Bob Mick Balsley worked the stage and the crowd. Boy is he good I thought to myself. The best I had ever seen. The rest of the band already sounded better than anything I had heard before, like we had played together for a few months time. The Kids loved us and were going crazythe Rolling Stones right in their own neighborhood and they had front row seats. The Animal Crackers came together that day as a group actually without a name for a while, but with the determination to practice and make something of this new Rock Band. It was over as quick as it started 3 years later in 1969, after an offer to tour with another group. 5 years ago we got in touch and agreed to meet once again. As before on that hot June afternoon, none of us were really sure what we would find. After thirty three years of silence and no contact with one another, what could possibly take place since all were strangers once again. Fact is we found more than anyone thought we would. True friendship, like good 60s Rock and Roll, stands the test of time. Its all Your Fault is our mission statement of sorts. Be prepared to listen to some of the best authentic 60s Garage Rock and Roll you might ever get a chance to hear. Were pleased to share our timeless journey with fans like you. To the Beatles, The Animals, The Rolling Stones, Kinks, Chuck Berry and many othersit really is All your Fault!
