There's A Starfish Burning On The Sidewalk There's A Starfish Burning On The Sidewalk
One of the shortest and most straightforward songs I've ever written.
Born in 1975, in New Haven, CT. His parents went back to their home in Ashland, WI with two-week-old Alex. His family moved to Madison, WI in 1985. He grew up listening to his mother playing the piano, and his uncle Anthony playing guitar. Even his dad, a Brooklyn man who is not a musician strummed an acoustic guitar around the house, singing tunes such as The House of The Rising Sun, and Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine man. He grew up listening to the sounds of Classic and Progressive Rock, as well as Classical Music, Jazz and Blues. After honing his skills with various local groups in Madison since the tender age of 14, Alex became a founding member and lead guitarist of the Progressive Rock band Fog Ship. The band enjoyed an enthusiatic cult audience locally, but also in countries like Belgium, Sweden, Germany, and Norway, where there's a big Progressive Rock following. Fog Ship's ferocious and intricate sound and wild stage theatrical performances enhanced their reputation and they were the first American band to ever win Progfest in Stockholm, Sweden.
Around the same time Alex's unique style started catching many producers' attention and becoming a much sought after guitar for hire, doing several recording sessions around the Chicago/Milwaukee area, as well as Minneapolis, MN and New York City, NY. He has also played guitar in a number of musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar, Tommy, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Les Miserables. Slowly but surely he started earning a reputation as an arranger as well.
The band dissolved shortly after 9/11. Alex moved down to Florida, Keith, the vocalist moved over to the Twin Cities, and the rest of the band started pursuing other musical and non-musical activities.
Alex continues to compose music, write songs, arrange and do recording sessions all over the country. He divides his time between Madison, WI and Southwest Florida.
