If you want to use the internal sounds on the Roland you'll need to use the 1/4" outputs. The internal sounds aren't good at all, though by today's standards. I recommend using it to control another program such as Reason or a drum program like EZdrummer, BFD, or the like....

I hook up my R-5 through MIDI. I plug the MIDI-out to the MIDI-in on my MIDI converer (MIDI Sport 2x2) which is plugged into my computer via USB. I don't use the sounds from the R-5, but only use it as a controller for my main synth program, Reason. I hope that helps a little....
