I've been making music since I can remember. I live to brighten the world around me through the use of color, music, fashion... everything. I sing and write, produce a little bit here and there, I'm a model and actress and I design unique fashion and accessories. Born and raised in Texas, I now reside in Davis California, however I work a lot in the San Francisco Bay area and I'm hoping to find myself living down in Los Angeles within the next 5 years. I plan to release a mixtape before the end of this year, so any producers interested in collaborating please contact me @ayyospectra at Gmail and Twitter.com.
Band/artist history
After an impressive debut splash as "J'anelle Avery" singer songwriter Danelle Mester took an unexpected sabattical from the music industry, separating from her management and completely dissolving her persona she worked so hard to build. "I felt like I was being set up for failure. There was so much hype. Too much hype. I had barely moved out to California and I was going hungry to pay for studio sessions, all the while I was being marketed as this spoiled rich diva who didn't have to work hard for anything. Playing that character left me feeling lost and out of control. So... I had to kill her." During her absence there was a lot of speculation. "People thought I was on drugs, that I had gotten pregnant. Stupid stuff. One guy was telling people he saw me working in a strip club. Anyone who knows me knows there is no chance in HELL you will ever catch me in a strip club. It was all very destructive." In actuality, the artist formerly known as J'anelle Avery suffered a crippling back injury that would leave her disabled for months and in one of the worst depressions of her life. 'I didn't walk for a month. It was really scary because the pain was so intense but, if I went too long without walking it would become increasingly difficult for me to walk again. In the end I struggled and suffered and got back on my feet." After 6 months of physical therapy she was back and in the best shape of her life. "That was like a rebirth for me. I knew I had to begin again, start anew. But not as the person people wanted me to be, but the person I saw myself to be. Thus SPECTRA was born!" Since the transformation SPECTRA has found herself in a through her music and art. She has expanded into acting and modeling, working with brands like Puma, Sony, the Glenlivet and artists including Fortilive, not to mention several musical collaborations with local artists. In this chapter of her career SPECTRA says she hopes to find a team of producers to work with and release a mixtape. "Right now I need to narrow down my sound. I know what I'm looking for but I need find the people who can deliver it. I'm always looking to grow and expand so I'd like to hook up with some futuristic people like me who wanna take the music to new places. Just gotta make dope shit." Have you performed in front of an audience?
I haven't had a chance to perform in a while but I love it. Its so hot up there, you are totally exposed, and you get into this moment with the people out there and time just slows down, and then like that its over too fast. I can't wait to do more.
Your musical influences
It started with the Spice Girls. I spent a huge amount of my childhood learning their songs and dance moves. Then I moved onto Destiny's Child and Beyonce, and that was the day I decided music was the life I had to have. Other great artists like Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Prince, so many have influenced my musical growth, and artists like Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Britney Spears inspire my modern sound.
What equipment do you use?
I use whatever I can get my hands on :) I'm currently working with an M-Audio Usb condenser mic and the M-Audio Oxygen 49.
