Band/artist history
The long history behind the Rhythm and Blues sensation known as VOKAL began early in 1987 at a wedding in Apopka, Florida. There, R&B vocalist Tai Wilson and Camaron Caines met for the first time. Though they went in seperate ways after the initial meeting, destiny was bound to bring the two voices back together. And in 1988 it did just that. A new group had started recording in South Florida, headed by nationally recognized R&B legend Mrs. Betty Wright of Ms. B's Records. It was called " The Image" and it had the potential to be the next hot item to take Florida by storm. There were initially three members that made up the voices of "The Image" with singers Tai Wilson and his brother Rod Wilson as the group lead singers. Later that year, Mrs. Wright decided that in order to get that fresh new sound the industry was looking for, a fourth member needed to be added to the group, and who else but Camaron Caines stepped up to audition and was soon offered a recording deal on the new label. As talented and capable the group was, They never officially took off the ground for several reasons. However, the experience and anticipation prompted Tai and Camaron to begin their own group in 1990 under the direction of Johnny Wright, manager of N'Sync and several other well known artists. The new flavor of the industry was known as Tra-C-Ray and the sound was phenomenal. It was wasn't long before others were eager to hear the hot new group perform. In 1991, Betty Wright, the owner of Tai and Camaron's previous label, called and asked the group to perform at the "Coming Out of the Light Tour". featuring Gloria Estefan. The tour was a huge success and drove Tra-C-Ray even harder to accomplish their goal of becoming the next R&B sound to explode throughout the nation. As the group pushed forward, they decided in 1993 to change their name from Tra-C-Ray to VOKAL hoping for a new soulful sound, and that's exactly what they got. The new name inspired a new attitude and a new drive and coupled with fresh, sizzling sound they were quickly rising to the top of the trump tight industry. On February 14, 1994, Independent label O-Town Records signed the enthusiastic group and they hit the streets on their first promotional tour, spicing up their new hit single and up and coming record "Ride". Though "Ride" was their first real breakthrough record, it ignited the national airwaves with an unbelieveably strong track record. The top radio stations nationwide bounced the beat out at an eagerly waiting public, pushing VOKAL to a quick success. During their promotional tour, VOKAL opened for several well known hip-hop and r&b artists such as Queen Latifah, 2 Live Crew, Tony Braxton, Tag-Team, 95 South and Brian McKnight, just to name a few. The tour gave VOKAL the much needed exposure to continue their rise of success. After the tour, things didn't stop there. Early in January of 1995, VOKAL (along with hip-hop acts, Julian "J-GUTTA" Rowe of "The Dirty Boyz" and DJ Nasty(Producer: Smylze & SouthStar and Ludacris ) did a song and a video for the Orlando Magic Association and their Back to Schoool Jam(in which headlined the late r&b queen Aaliyah) called "Aint No Stoppin' the Magic",once again backed by the infamous Johnny Wright. In late January of 1995, VOKAL turned over their management to East Coast Express, who began with the group recording for two years in Philadelphia, Pa. On May 13, 1997, Tai Wilson was involved in a head on collision, which landed him in the hospital for two weeks and in-house recovery, unable to walk for four months. Reluctantly, VOKAL was forced to be put on hold until Tai was well enough to begin recording again. That October, Tai had run full course in remedial treatment, and with eagerness VOKAL was able to return to the mic's, strong not only individually, but collectively . Finally, in November of 1997 they were able to do their next live performance for Studio 110 while promoting their new hard hitting single, "Straight to 'da Mote". After trying relentlessly to no avail to get "Straight to 'da Mote" played on Florida's top Hip Hop and R&B station 102 Jamz, VOKAL settled for pushing the new song out on the waves of an underground radio station owned by hip-hop & r&b based Clientale Entertainment. Quickly, the imaginations of the undergeround stations listeners fed off of the erotic words and the sexy beat and the song became such a requested hit that 102 Jamz and its sister stations picked the songs up and pushed it out at an awaiting audience. It wasn't long before Universal Records heard the new sound in action and eagerly signed Vokal in April of 1998. VOKAL was now one of the top leading artists around and with their new single getting play throughout the entire country they quickly hit the billboard chart called Bubbling Under at #25. In the Summer of 1998, Universal underwent a freeze, laying off thousands of their employees and cutting promotions of all film and records. Though this was a devastating turn of events for the uprising group, VOKAL didn't let it stop them. They continued pursuing their career, recording new songs and even producing new groups of their own, such as 5th Period, a teen HipHop and R&B group which they promoted on such shows Talk-or-Walk.VOKAL has been on the grind day in and out trying to give that thing they love back to the waiting fans, recording several songs for the UPCOMING ALBUM, "CONFIRMATION". Tai, Cam,and Torrey have been consistently perfecting their craft and trying to please as many of their fans as possible by doing dates throughout the U.S. as well as possibly making it over to Japan to do some dates, according to some Japanese sources.DON'T WORRY FANS VOKAL IS BOUT TO PUT IT DOWN!!!!!
