Brooklyn has had its share of groundbreaking entertainers. First there was Big Daddy Kane and MC Lyte, then there was The Notorious BIG and Lil Kim, and next to put his mark down is the infamous Shorty Roc.
Shorty Roc burst on the scene in 2003 with his underground smash Ten Gay Commandments, his rendition of the classic DJ Premiere produced Biggie joint Ten Crack Commandments. He took his music to the streets with the banger and performed at gay clubs such as, Langstons, The Legendary Warehouse, The Clubhouse, and Sunday Nights at The Lab. He gained underground praise for his street delivery, catchy punch lines and his heavy performance. In Summer of 2004, he put his first CD to the streets, The Mixtape: Jackin Beats, which he put hot flows on top of some of the hottest hits, which made its way through the NY gay circuit. The mixtape contained classics like the sexual Bust that, the dancy Two Step, and the sensual If I have nothing else. The mixtape also contained songs like Nigga Please, Holla Back Son, and This is my quest, which expressed the troubles of dating, society, and growing rate of HIV and AIDS. Also that summer, he participated in the gay hip-hop festival Peace Out East in NY and Peace Out East in Atlanta. Shorty has also performed a showcase at the legendary Nuyorican Poets Café, where the crowd was very diverse and still caught the ears and attention from all. In February 2005, he had a listening party sponsored by GMAD (Gay Men of African Descent) and participated in there Friday night forum, where he spoke on the panel about black gay men and there careers. During that year hes performed at other venues like, The Bowery Poets Café, and the campus of the Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance. Shorty made his second appearance at Peace Out East, which was held at the Nuyorican Poets Café, premiering his controversial joint, Rappers Delight 06. Roc also participated in a documentary titled Homophobia in Hip Hop, which is currently being screened at college campuses across the country. After a small break, Shorty Roc is back with his second effort Personal, which will be available right here on this site as well as CDBaby.com. Shorty is in the midst of taking Rappers Delight 06 and Personal to pride events, gay clubs, showcases, and college campuses across the country.
Shorty Roc believes his purpose is to talk to the gay community about issues in their lifestyle such as, safe sex, dating, troubles with society, and pride for self. With all of this, he plans to be the poster boy for the gay community and the emerging gay hip hop circuit. Shorty Roc is said to be one of the fewest MCs able to flow to various types of beats and smash any audience.
