Randy Smith (CA)

I write about everyday life with soft spiritual undertones. Well ok maybe just a little demented humour thrown in there.

Band/artist history
I've been singing since age 5. My paternal Grandparents had a local band called 'Allan Smith and the Serenaders' My Dad played and sang with the band, as well. I was a solo act from '87 - '93 in Southern Alberta, before joining a Country Rock band called 'Wild Frontier'. We played all over Western Canada, but my traditional roots were starting to show themselves in the songs I wrote. My passion for the Traditional sound had me part ways with the band and focus on writing my own stuff. In the winter of 2000, I made a trip to Nashville to record a couple of originals and perform. I was given the opportunity to perform at 'Tootsie's Orchid Lounge' and the 'Hall of Fame Room'. It was the fastest week I've ever spent away from home. I've entered many contests (some you win, some you don't win) most of which I came away with a better understanding of what I liked to write and sing. Whether the judges were looking my way or not was irrelevent, there were now 200 - 300 NEW people per contest, who have never heard me sing before, that now knew what I could do.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
Yes, although not as often as I would prefer. I love performing for an audience, especially for someone that has never heard me before. I think because, it's that initial reaction that you see on their faces and the appreciation, is so cool. I remember when I was down in Nashville at the end of 2000. I was up singing with a band during a jam session at, I think it's called the 'Hall of Fame' Room and the song was 'Unchained Melody'. The room was not real busy, but there were about 60 people that night and it was almost funny to see their reaction. Almost all the conversations stopped, heads were turning, people were clammering from around the corner up by the bar to see who was on stage. It was all just really cool. Yah, that's my word. I think my most memorable moment was while I was performing as a solo act at a small club in Southern Alberta. I sang a song I wrote about my Father after he passed away and during the next break, a gentleman walked up to me and said how much he had enjoyed that song. He told me that while listening to it, he realized that he couldn't remember the last time he'd ever told his Dad how much he loved him. He was going to go home that night and call him to let him know. So that was,...you guessed it...COOL, in fact AWESOME!!!
Your musical influences
My Influences range from Marty Robbins, Jim Reeves and Roy Orbison to Don Williams, Doug Stone, George Strait and Alan Jackson. There are so many people to name, but I would say that my Father and Grandfather are my biggest influences. I still remember my Dad singing around the campfires and my Grandparents playing down in their basement.
