One night diggin around in his Great Aunt Argatha's attic, 12 year-old Jahni found an old, hand-written book of voodoo spells scrawled in the dusty pages. Every night after this he would run upstairs to the attic trying to learn magik.
At first Jahni thought of the warnings he had read at the begginning of the book, that the magik must be performed only by experienced hands and even then without completing the ritual exactly as it was written, there could be dire consequences. In the end, curiousity won out and Jahni tried his first spell. It was to be a simple spell, just to get a little money.
Upon finishing the spell, a gust of wind swept through the attic and blew out his candle. Jahni frantically re-lit the candle and suddenly an owl flew out of nowhere and landed on the windowsill outside...it's glass-like eyes reflecting the dim light of the room.
In the following nights after this, Jahni attempted the spell 5 more times. on the 6th try, he noticed in the tree outside the window, now sat 6 owls, instead of one. Jahni's Great Aunt Argatha came upstairs just as he was sitting on the wood floor, staring out the window. When she saw what he was doing, she snatched him up and closed the book in a fury! "What are you doing up here boy?! Don't be messin around wit that book! Now come back downstairs..."
Aunt Argatha froze in her tracks as she saw the owls outside the window. They all stared back at her with thier mirror-like, painted glass eyes. "How many spells did you do up here boy?" she asked now in a waivering voice. "Six." came the answer. Both Jahni and his Aunt jumped at the same time. It was not he that answered the question, but the voices of 6 small children...that wafted from outside the window. "No..." Argatha croaked in a hoarse whisper. "Six." Jahni and his aunt could hardly beleive thier eyes and ears, as they saw the owls speak the single word once more... "SIX!"
"No!" Aunt Argatha screamed as the glass window shattered and in flew the owls, tearing at her...clawing viciously "The hoot owls! Run Jahni! The hoot owls!". But 12 year old Jahni was frozen on the cold wooden floor, huddled in a corner as he watched the owls grow to 3 times thier original size, and at horrific speed defying reason, they disemboweled and ate his Great Aunt alive.
After thier morbid repast, the owls all turned thier heads to Jahni and spoke. "Eshu is not pleased with you boy. You forgot the cleansing rituals. But we are more than pleased." Jahni suddenly realized from the pages in the book, that by not performing the cleansing rituals properly before his attempts, he had released a Baki (evil spirit) each time. That night, they left the boy alone, in a blood-soaked attic, crying himself to sleep. But this would only be the begginning of many horrors he would be forced to endure from now on.
