Five angry bastards from Boston with phat grooves and phat riffs. Cracker rap that rocks.
Band/artist history
Pimp Core, Rapcore, Urban Metal, Rap Metal and Cracker Rap are terms that have all been used to describe the sound of Gangsta Bitch Barbie. In basic terms, GBB is simply 5 pissed off guys from Boston with phat beats, phat riffs, and an ax to grind. In 2 very short years, GBB became one of the top drawing bands in Boston, a city not typically known for its support of the heavy stuff. In the summer of '97 Chris Fitzgerald and Todd Nickulous quit their punk band and started jamming with Jim Shippey and Danny Marques, who had quit their metal bands. Songs came quickly, but they were sorely in need of a singer, since not one of them could carry a tune. Enter Ken Smith, fresh from getting the boot as drummer of the band that was rehearsing down the hall. Ken wandered in one night, beer in hand, grabbed a microphone, and all jaws hit the floor when this dude opened his mouth: the sound was like two wolverines fighting inside a garbage can. GBB had a singer. The gigs came quickly, the audiences grew, and within one year Gangsta Bitch Barbie had won first place in a Battle Of The Bands contest, the booty from which they recorded their indie release "This Is Not A Test". (The disc is distributed by Wonderdrug Records, Boston.)Shortly after the release of "Test", Todd Nickulous exited GBB and was replaced by Jim Foster who had produced the CD. In July of 2000, drummer Danny Marques exited and was replaced by Mick Palmesano. Various tracks from "Test" have received airplay on New England radio stations WAAF, WBCN, WFNX, WCYY, and KXTE in Las Vegas. The band website: http://listen.to/gbb receives over 1500 hits per month and well over 10,000 GBB MP3 files have been downloaded from sites like rollingstone.com, riffage.com, soundclick.com, Boston.com, and IUMA.com, where GBB is consistently among the daily most downloaded of all bands on the site. GBB is currently recording their debut for Grand Royal Records, which is being produced by Howard Benson. Look for a release date early in 2001.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
We gig perpetually around New England and absolutely love it. Especially when young girls are worshipping at our feet. Special moments? That has to be the gig where one of the most important record companies in the universe (and one we were dying to impress) flew all the way from Los Angeles to see us and magically, nothing worked onstage. Guitar strings were breaking, pedal boards crapping out, amps were buzzing...that sure was special. Needless to say, it was a long night.
Your musical influences
Rage Against The Machine, Ice Cube, Descendants, anything that makes a great deal of noise.
Anything else?
Check out the press: Things get thrown into hyperdrive with "Godzilla" and "Kingpin". The latter of these two remains my favorite with a definite vocal hook that is going to bore itself into your brain. Gangsta Bitch Barbie could well be unstoppable...Zach De La Rocha had better keep an eye in his band's rear view mirror. (The Daily Vault) Since the release of "This Is Not A Test" last summer, Gangsta Bitch Barbie has worked overtime. Vocalist Kenny Smith hasn't hurt the cause - he's gained a reputation as a major showman by hanging from the ceiling by his ankles at the close of the show. (Worcester Phoenix) A promising new Boston band. (Boston Globe) Snarling guitars, sneering bleeding-throat roars, elephantine bass and veritable Drums Of Navarone. Gangsta Bitch Barbie has two important aspects going for them: their unrelenting aggression and the threatening charisma of a crank-ridden biker. (Northeast Performer) Songs such as Godzilla and Fluff O Nutta are fierce blasts of hard rock...A firestorm of viscious urban metal. (Sidewalk Boston Entertainment Guide) This quintet is musically as tight as anyone could hope for as they pour gasoline all over these compositions and toss the match...kaboom, is what you're in for. (Metronome) This Is Not A Test...sports big power riffing, bigger drums, and rhymes that are both smart and funny. "Godzilla" is a number the Beastie Boys wish they could have written; and "Kingpin"...is actually more clever than the majority of the crap that's being written by GBB's contemporaries. (Worcester Phoenix) Heavy stuff...this bunch raises the blood pressure. (Soundcheck Magazine) With the subtlety of a flame-thrower, Gangsta Bitch Barbie...busts out with a combustible mixture of hardcore rap sure to get the mosh pits swirling. Super glue tight.
