Band/artist history
Mark grew up in the suburbs of Toronto, Canada and spent a great deal of time in the basement with his drums, basses (upright and electric), guitars, keyboards and a four-track. He became equally proficient on all of the above instruments. Upon graduating Cawthra Park Performing Arts High School, he studied at the Banff Centre for the Arts for the summer, and moved to Boston to study Performance and Composition for three years at Berklee College of Music, courtesy of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council. It was then time to move to New York City. During the next seven years, Mark would hone his craft as a singer/songwriter, and would perform and record all over the world as a leader, as well as along side others, including The Crash Test Dummies, Blaise Pascal, Jen Chapin, Wynton Marsalis, Betty Carter, Jack DeJohnette, Dave Holland, Brian Blade, etc, etc, etc. Mark has performed at the Apollo in Harlem, Lincoln Center, Bitter End, CBGB's in NYC, Roy Thompson Hall, Horseshoe, Lee's Palace in Toronto, as well across Canada and the U.S., Europe and Japan. In 1998, Mark received a Grammy nomination for Jazz Album of the Year for "Thank You, John", a tribute to John Coltrane. (Arkadia Records) Other awards include six artist grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council, a scholarship to Berklee College of Music, winner of Roland Songwriting Competition, John Lennon Songwriting Competition, Billboard Songwriting Competition and ASCAP Songwriting Competition. Back from a seven-year residence in New York City, Mark has spent the last three years in the Toronto area producing independent CDs for local singer/songwriters, as well as performing his original songs, which can be heard on his self-produced album "Horse with a Broken Leg". (Fresh Sound Records) It is available at www.amazon.com and at retailers worldwide. Contact Mark at markzubek@sympatico.ca
