No matter race, age or background upbringing, everyone can relate to the message in the music that i write.
Band/artist history
At the time I didn't know, but I was born poor as hell in the Delta of the Dirty South. The bayou and cotton fields were my playing grounds. I was born to Major Young Jr. II of Dublin Mississippi , and Stella Mae (Croffert) Young of Tallahatchie County. Named after my father and grandfather, I am Major Terell Young III. Besides my parents, I was raised by my great grandmother Ida Mae Gardner the matriarch of a vast family. On my mother's side of the family, they were field hands and tractor drivers. My father's family were sharecroppers. At times my grandfather bootlegged (alcohol) to make ends meet. The majority of my relatives chopped cotton and worked the fields. I just played in them. My first introduction to music was the original field hand music of the south, which is still present today. This original music of the south has given birth to many types of music: Gospel, blues, Rock & Roll, R&B, and Rap. As we sang in church, you could feel our struggle and pain, even through the uplifting psalms of praise.
At the age of six, my family moved to West Germany . I stayed there for four years soaking up cultural knowledge that could never be replaced. After my mother's tour of duty was complete, we returned to the United States. Instead of heading south, we settled in Lansing, Michigan. In Lansing, I attended Mount Hope Elementary, Sheridan Road Elementary, Otto Middle School, and Lansing Eastern High School. School was my only outlet to express myself in art. There I learned my style, creativity, and game. I also learned to never judge a book by its cover. If I ever smiled at home it was only in family portraits. It was Hustable (Cosby) by nature, but my eyes told a different story.
Like most black southerners, I grew up in church. No matter how your home life was, you always attended church. The way the King James Version was written intrigued me from an early age. The writers told the stories using parables. The author's message was written to convey one thing and mean another. This would make people think. No matter how many times an individual read the scriptures, they would always find new meanings. Mrs. Steagstra, my literature and writing teacher at Eastern High School , introduced me to the works of William Shakespeare. Even though the kat lived many moons ago, his way of expressing a story is off the chain! Shakespeare wrote things like, "Where forth art thou." My teacher asked students to explain the meanings of this verse. I could, because I grew up reading the King James Version of the Bible. Since my eleventh grade year at Eastern High, I've been writing for poets, rappers, singers, preachers, Evangelists, and many others.
Now back to me. I moved away from home, and bought a house at nineteen. Over the years I've done a lot of things that I am not proud of, but I did them. For instance, I put in time, cut the grass, washing powder, cleaned the cash, farmed the hens, I sold the chicks, laid the pipes, stacked the bricks. Don't worry mom and pops; even though I've done some things, I've changed my ways. No more playing games. I've been writing for eleven years. My style of rap influenced by blues has been going on for about two years straight. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, I practice. "To be continued..."
Have you performed in front of an audience?
