replife is an emcee, poet, journalist, educator and social activist based in cleveland, oh. he is considered one of the midwest region's most eloquent and diverse wordsmiths with work appearing on sound recordings, poetry anthologies, and magazines you might have seen somewhere. he hopes you dig what you hear.
Band/artist history
poet, journalist and emcee, daniel gray-kontar is one of the midwest region's most important, but little-known wordsmiths. kontar's social, music and arts writing has appeared in such magazine's as "the source", "the village voice", "wax poetics", "the philadelphia weekly", "in pittsburgh weekly", and "the cleveland free times". kontar is also founder of the underground monthly magazine, "urban dialect." his poems have appeared in such anthologies as "bum rush the page: a def poetry jam", "spirit and flame: an anthology of contemporary african american poets", and on the sound recording "grand slam: the best of the national poetry slam, volume one." kontar is also the 1994 national poetry slam co-champion, and co-founder of the groundbreaking performance poetry ensemble the black poetic society. while kontar's writing has appeared in a number of venues, his emceeing is little-known, except in a few circles, where he is regarded as one of cleveland's most important writers representing the fusion of theater, narrative poetry, and riming. here, you'll find work in progress from his forthcoming independent full-length release, "the book of job." the project is a fusion of live instrumentation, electronic musical production, and sampling, featuring a combination of up-and-coming and veteran musicians and emcees from cleveland, north carolina, pittsburgh, UK, san diego, virginia, chicago, and philadelphia. check out and enjoy these rare excerpts from one of the most potent wordsmith's in the funky midwest.
Have you performed in front of an audience?
i play live all throughout the funky midwest, in particular: cleveland, pittsburgh, columbus, detroit, chicago. i love to record, but there's nothing like the energy i get from the audience for a live show. whenever i perform the song "alright" it's always special. at the end of the song, there's always crazy participation from the crowd. and that's what's up.
Your musical influences
way too many to name. but just to mention a few: a tribe called quest, boogie down productions, public enemy, run dmc, the roots, brand new heavies, common, black star, miles davis, al jarreau, minnie ripperton, freddie hubbard ... ok, i'm naming too many now. i'll stop.
What equipment do you use?
my crew uses mostly the asr 10, the mpc 2000, fruity loops (sometimes), cool edit pro, pro tools.
Anything else?
thanks for visiting this page, and speak soon. as i always say to people i'm just meeting, it's ALWAYS good to connect the dots ... to learn each other's stories. that's what this life is about. feel it?
