ThePhantom, Born Kemet Dumas Coleman, was born in Kansas City, Missouri. At an early age Kemet was exposed to gospel, jazz, blues, and hip hop. He increasingly gained in interest in music by listening to music with his two older brothers. Hotep, the middle brother, was a fan of the east coast rap scene of the mid nineties, and his eldest, Andre was a fan of the southern Hip Hop scene. They would blast rap music everyday while their parents were at work; all this while Kemet engrossed the sophistication of Hip Hop. He began chanting the lyrics of rap greats such as Notorious BIG, Master P, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Tupac, and Tech N9ne. He soon realized that fate would carry him to pursue a rap career. Realizing his uniqueness as a rapper, and his often times dark inspired lyrics he embraced the rap name "kAo5" At 13 He formed a group with Mark "Key" Green named Da Royalz. They recorded several songs and released their debut album "Royalty." Kemet produced the entire album. ThePhantom produced hip hop and rock instrumentals for local aspiring rap and rock artists who recognized his craft. Battling with conflicting interests and time constrictions, Da Royalz took a mutual hiatus in 2003. This was the start of ThePhantoms solo career.
While in high school he met with future business and musical collaborator, Josh "Bravado" Mascarenas. Bravado had a home studio and embraced Kemet's endeavors allowing him free studio time. He recorded his first solo album, Transition: Vol. 1. It gained incredible feedback from his high school. He began doing shows before his school at homecoming assemblies and pep rallies with Bravado (then known as LOCO). In the summer of 2005 Kemet struggled personally and set out to find his inner voice. He actually quit rapping for three months and pursued his interests, in philosophy, afro centrism, theater, and politics. He began reading, increasing his vocabulary and his spectrum of knowledge. This sparked his hidden intellect and he initiated a comeback to the rap game. Upon reflection he soon discovered that he had made a psychological transition since his earlier days of kAo5. He realized that he was talking about the same trite subjects and was persistent to maintaining his own unique sound. Hence, he changed his name to ThePhantom. He became a "writing fool" at this time. In three weeks ThePhantom, wrote, produced, and recorded his second album "De Ja Vu: Vol. 2" His partner, Bravado, dubbed it to be "The best underground album." He also noticed a change by saying "The lyrics are better and you talk more about society and your surroundings." Bravado adds "He's definitely an emcee spitter type poet like Nas or Rakim, but he also has a flare of Tech [N9ne].
With skills in singing, producing, rapping, and audio engineering, ThePhantom is the definition of the "total package" Let the mystery intrigue you and engross the poetic intellect and rhythmic precision of the future.
