If you are not familiar with the Small city in the sky, youre about to be. Not since the chants of Petey Pablo telling us to take our shirts and twist them like helicopters has much noise come out of North Carolina; that is, until now. Rapper, Bingo one half of Dem Carolina Boiz is ready to put Asheville, North Carolina on the map.
Bingo, born Troyce Sanders, was born in raised in Asheville, North Carolina. While many have the misconception that cities in North Carolina are rural and laid back, the twenty three year old rapper wants it to be clear that Da Ville is in the country, but it is ninety percent hood and ten percent country.
At the age of 7, Bingo and his cousin would freestyle constantly, and this continued for the next three years whenever they were together. They would rap to any genre of music ranging from country to hip hop. It didnt matter what type of music it was, as long as there was a beat, says Bingo. Bingo credits his versatility as a rapper to the countless sessions he had with his cousin in his earlier years.
Bingo says his biggest inspiration is his mother. When he was young, his mother maintained a household and held down several jobs at one time. She wanted to make sure that we did not go without, says Bingo, and now that my father is gone, God rest his soul, I want to be able to provide for my mother and make sure shes secure. Bingo credits his mother for his work ethic and outlook on life.
Bingos musical influences are apparent in his style of performance and writing. He biggest musical influences are Outkast, Eightball and MJG, Ghetto Boyz, the original Cash Money crew and the artists of the No Limit family. Bingo hopes that one day his music will be influential on other up and coming artists. In addition to respected artists, Bingo wants to make people remember the days when everyone was broke and wasnt buying Cristal and Moet. I want people to remember when it was alright to bump into a cat in the clubwhen the energy in the club was not this church-type fashion showwhen it was O.K. to sweat ya hair out, when you didnt have to have a stack in ya pocket to get a dance, because you didnt have to dance with nobody; you had your own vibe going. Bingo also adds he remembers and longs for the days when you knew you had to leave the dance floor at a certain time cause it was going to get ugly when a certain song was playedI want to bring that back. My goal, he says with a smile, is to have at least one song banned globally!
With the current success of Dem Carolina Boiz first single Start a Riot and the popular southern anthem of Shrimp and Grits gaining club and radio play, Dem Carolina Boiz prove that they are a hip hop force to be reckoned with. Bingos hometown in North Carolina is only a few hours outside of Georgia and about an hour from Tennessee; both are homes to the energetic music of Crunk and Buck. Bingo describes his sound as a blend of both the styles but like one adds the pepper to gumbo I add the fire to Crunk and Buck; a different day a different sound, holla at ya boiz!
Big V, born Vincent Neclos, was born in Southeast, Washington D.C., but he calls Hendersonville, North Carolina home. I am able to use what I know and have experienced in both places in my music, Big V says. Hendersonville is a small southern city, but let me clear up any misconceptions-the south only makes us that much crazier because we feel like we have something to prove. As the other half of the talented rap duo Dem Carolina Boiz Big V is here to clear up any misconceptions.
Big V comes from a musical family. His father is an accomplished drummer and his older brother 88 is a talented pianist as well as one of the hottest hip hop and R&B producers in Washington DC. At the age of eleven, Big V tried to rap for his brother but like big brothers do, he never really paid him much attention. My brother would just laugh and never say anything, to this day I still get the same reaction from him when I spit, Big V says. Big V and his brother plan to work together in the near future.
Big V got his start as a member of a six-man group named Punish Squad. The group put out an underground CD called Gettin Started, and they performed together at multiple local venues. Currently the members of Punish Squad are working on independent projects and plan to record together as a group in the future.
Big Vs biggest inspiration for making it in the rap game is his four-year-old son and keeping him away from the environment where he spent his early years. While growing up in South East, D.C. Big V witnessed violence and drugs. He moved to North Carolina, only to return to Washington DC to attend Howard University. When I came back I realized that no matter what the situation is, if you work hard and set goals, you can make it. My son is definitely the reason I made it this far.
Big V grew up listening to EPMD, Run DMC, LL Cool J and Kool Moe Dee. Today his favorite artists are 50 Cent and the whole G-Unit click, but the one artist he relates to the most from the crew is Young Buck. One reason is because they are both from small southern towns, and the stories that he tells are similar to situations Big V has experienced.
With the current success of Dem Carolina Boiz first single Start a Riot and the popular southern anthem of Shrimp and Grits gaining club and radio play, Dem Carolina Boiz prove that they are a hip hop force to be reckoned with and Big V wants everyone to be sure that they know that there is plenty more where that came from. Dem Carolina Boiz are currently in the studio working on their latest CD which will be coming to a record store near you; get ready.
