Band/artist history
In the late spring of 2003, a group of musicians who had been playing together and separately in projects since highschool all met up by a twist of circumstances in the same place at the same time. It was this moment that Blacktop Recess was born. After perhaps the most killer summer there had ever been for the local music scene, Blacktop faced its first real adversity when some members moved away to go to school in cities no less than two hours away. Scattered, the band pressed on, playing gigs on the weekend to keep practiced. Whether members had to take buses in a snowstorm an hour and a half away to make a gig, or riding trains for hours on end to make things work, Blacktop fought tooth and nail to keep going, and keep growing as a band and family. In the winter of 2006, Blacktop Recess released its first studio release, a self-titled ep. Recorded by Scott Pipe at Crosscurrent studios, where such bands as Something Fatal and Lemon Plastic recorded their albums, the band finally had a CD they could be proud of. Over the next year, the band continued to play gigs regularly and somehow make ends meet. Adversity continued to fall upon the group. One member felt it was time to move on, and some remaining members decided to start a new project which would prove to be short lived without the strength of the entire family. Upon the demise of said project, all four members of Blacktop were left bandless and wondering how things got so far off of the track they had set upon. Then, in early 2008, something happened.. The pieces came back together one by one. Brett and Matt, who remained good friends in spite of everything, found themselves bored one weekend and called up Jr. The result was a jam that hadn't been experienced in a year or more. A short while later, Phil was approached and the band decided they needed to start working together again, one sound, one family. After working hard to write the best songs they had ever procured, Blacktop realized that the demands of the songs were simply too much to balance with the demands of the vocals, and complete focus on both areas was necessary. Matt had been playing with this little-known guitar player and was very excited about his potential. After much deliberation, the band decided to give this new guy a shot, and were very impressed. Shortly thereafter, Blacktop welcomed Kyle to the family. Finally the planets had aligned and the storm had begun. Renewed, refreshed, and better than ever, Blacktop Recess began recording its follow-up concept lp entitled "Second Wind", which is significantly more vicious, melodic, and intricate than any effort they have given thus far.
